The Digital Public Library of America seeks a Director of Technology to lead its staff of developers and technologists, and to further DPLA’s mission to bring together the riches of America’s libraries, archives, and museums, and make them freely available to all. A belief in this mission and the drive to accomplish it over time in a collaborative spirit both within and beyond the organization is essential. The Director of Technology will be responsible for the overall technology vision for the DPLA, and in consultation with the DPLA senior staff, will develop of new initiatives and cross-institutional partnerships. The Director of Technology will report to the Executive Director. Requirements * Experience with managing developers and technologists in the cultural heritage or non-profit sectors, with a demonstrated capacity of building an environment for success for technical teams. * Demonstrated experience working effectively in a team environment and the ability to interact effectively with stakeholders. * Demonstrated experience contributing to or managing collaborative open source software projects. * Excellent written and verbal communication skills. * Excellent analytical and organizational skills. * A high degree of emotional intelligence and empathy. Preferred * Experience with architectures, standards, and protocols to support interoperability and reuse within and beyond the cultural heritage sector. * Demonstrated experience with technical project management, grant writing and administration, and/or development and oversight of RFP processes. * Demonstrated desire to learn new technologies or programming languages. Instructor: Kurtis Heimerl TA: Aditya Vashistha Time: MW 1:30-2:50 Location: MGH 082A Credits: 4 Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) are having enormous impact on the livelihoods of the world, from tech workers taking Uber to work, to farmers using online forums to share best practices, to people in rural areas using cellular phones to stay up to date on their children in the big city. Often ICTs take power away from disadvantaged communities (e.g., rural) and centralize it in those with the money and knowhow to use the technologies. As these interventions sweep through communities throughout the world, we strive to understand how to build technologies that instead empower and support marginalized groups. This class will focus on exploring how to build technologies for communities that you are not a part of (short answer, get involved!), understanding the space of people and organizations engaging with and solving these kinds of problems (from Facebook to the Clinton Health Initiative to Ob Anggen), and eventually building our own (likely naive) solutions. While a critical theory of development is important to doing good work, this is a class for builders and designers. All students will complete a project and end up with an artifact; potentially a tool (designed and/or built) for empowering community health workers or a model for mapping satellite data to population density. We at the UW's Clinical Informatics Research Group (http://cirg.washington.edu) are looking for graduate and undergraduate students interested in hourly or RA positions in software development. This is a great opportunity for students to gain experience with open-source software engineering and health informatics. Our group designs, develops, and administers clinical, global, population, and consumer health information systems for both research and usual care. Requirements: * Demonstrated development experience with PHP or Python, and database experience with PostgreSQL or MySQL. * Comfort working with Linux systems at the command line. * 10-20 hours / week. Desired experience: * Python Flask, CakePHP. * HTML5, CSS, Javascript. * Development of consumption of RESTful APIs. * Mobile dev. * Health informatics. PROBLEM At a time when ideological divisions deepen disengagement, classism and racism isolates communities, and disinvestment in safety nets destabilizes families, the health of our public is deeply threatened. These civic roots have a tremendous impact on the physical and mental health and wellbeing of our communities. To create a healthy public, we believe that technology can be used as a tool to ensure the public's vitality against the chronic maladies of isolation, disempowerment, and instability. Civic Hall Labs launches the Healthy Public Challenge as a call for solutions that build a healthy society in these three target categories: 1. Celebrating its 6th anniversary, this year's conference is dedicated to "Advancing Technology for Humanity", focusing on key areas including energy, health, disaster management, connectivity, agriculture, and education. Hello All, OpenMRS is looking for help with their public website. They are wanting to migrate the current design into a new wordpress site with some customized integrations with their other tools (JIRA, etc). They want to make their website more effective at getting to the software, getting involved in the community, and acknowledging partners and contributors. Some of the design work is already done, but they need help completing it and migrating the content.
