Mustafa will be talking about makerspaces in Pakistan. *What: *Make-i-stan: Makerspaces as a tool to spur cross-disciplinary collaboration. *When: *Tuesday, October 24 *Where: *The Allen Center, CSE 203 *Abstract:* Pakistan has an education emergency – 6.7 million Pakistanis aged 5-9 are not enrolled in primary school. At the secondary level, the number of out-of-school children jumps to 25 million, with only 39 percent of boys and 29 percent of girls enrolled. The system of education discourages critical thinking and lacks opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration. This talk presents findings from Make-i-stan, a makerspace that welcomes interdisciplinary collaboration and critical thinking through learning by doing in an informal setting. *Bio:* Mustafa Naseem is a Pakistani educator, social entrepreneur and ICTD Expert in Residence at the University of Colorado Boulder's ATLAS Institute. Prior to joining CU Boulder, Naseem was the founding director of the Innovations for Poverty Alleviation Lab (IPAL) in Lahore, Pakistan. Mustafa has worked with the MIT Global Startup Labs (formerly MIT AITI) South Africa Program, the Deming Center Venture Fund (DCVF) and the International Development Design Summit (IDDS). Mustafa's interests lie at the intersection of technology, policy and entrepreneurship geared towards solving global development challenges. Mustafa was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Colorado at Boulder where his work focused on Information and Communication Technology for Development (ICTD).

The fellowships are the result of a partnership between CSDE, CSSS and the eScience institute. The BD2K fellowship program is designed to provide integrated training in three core areas essential for future advances in demographic research: demography, statistics (and machine learning), and computing (programming, data management, etc). The goal of this initiative is to prepare a new generation of population scientists who are well versed in data science, computational methods and social statistics and who will harness the power of new, diverse, complex, and unstructured data sources to address important research questions in the biomedical, behavioral and social sciences. The fellowships will begin in the Winter 2017 quarter, and provide fellows with a monthly stipend at the NIH predoctoral level and $500 to attend conferences. CSDE will pay full tuition, the graduate operating fee, and health insurance premiums. Current Graduate Students who are in PhD programs of CSDE Affiliated Departments or Schools (Anthropology, Epidemiology, Geography, Health Services, Public Affairs, Social Work, Sociology, and Statistics) are eligible to apply. Fellowship recipients are required to maintain continuous residence, remain in good standing in their home department, complete the core sequence of courses in demography (e.g., CSDE/SOC 533 “Demographic Methods” and SOC 590 “Data Science and Population Processes”), pursue advanced training in statistics or machine learning (e.g., by completing a CSSS track or other coursework, as appropriate), and take appropriate courses in the area of Software Development and Data Management (e.g., CSE 599 “Software Development for Data Scientists, CSE 414 “Introduction to Data Management”). Successful applicants have likely completed some coursework in at least two of the three core areas. Fellowship recipients are required to attend at least one quarter of the CSDE seminars, at least one quarter of the CSSS seminars and at least one quarter of the eScience Community seminars. Fellows are also required to work with a mentoring team on a mutually agreed upon research project for 15-19 hours per week. The mentoring team should be composed of at least 2 affiliates of CSDE, CSSS or eScience, with the appropriate expertise in methods and the substantive area of research. Hello, I am a research fellow at the Center for Technology, Innovation and Competition at the University of Pennsylvania. I work on a project named 1 World Connected, which seeks to catalog all innovative efforts to expand the Internet’s reach and improve adoption. We hope to do so by compiling and disseminating case studies about these initiatives, as well as empirically assessing their impact using available data. The hope is to give key decision makers a firmer, data-based foundation for determining the best approaches for achieving the goal of universal connectivity. We launched our website a couple of days ago with a few initial case studies; they can be accessed at 1worldconnected.org<http://1worldconnected.org/>. Over the last few months, we have undertaken a broad literature survey to compile a list of initiatives and projects around the world that are currently aiming to improve connectivity across the world. I am sharing the preliminary results of my survey here. The list spans different supply- and demand-side initiatives across a range of technologies and stakeholder groups (community networks, TVWS trials, digital literacy programs, accessibility initiatives etc.) I have identified key information about each initiative and categorized them on an excel sheet, available here: https://goo.gl/rZLsWN One of our main goals is to expand the list of potential case study candidates in order to be as broad and inclusive as we can.
