MobiSys 2016: ASSET Symposium Specially Tailored for your Students

Regards, Waylon As part of MobiSys 2016 being held in Singapore from June 23 - June 30 2016, there is an accompanying 1st Asian Students Symposium on Emerging Technologies or ASSET for short. The full symposium details are at the URL below. Here are three key parts of ASSET. http://www.sigmobile.org/mobisys/2016/symposium.php 1) ASSET is designed for students who have had limited research exposure at international conference venues. In particular, as part of ASSET, students will *get to attend an international research conference*, present their research to a panel of experts, and also get to interact with and build their peer networks. They will also get to present their work at the demo/poster session of the main MobiSys conference itself! And have a *1 page writeup* of the demo/poster presentation appear *in the ACM Digital Library* as part of the supplementary MobiSys proceedings. Note: you don't have to be based in Asia or even of Asian ethnicity to attend ASSET or to apply for the scholarships below. Everyone is welcome! 2) To support students, we are offering *full travel and registration scholarships* which will cover a large part of the expenses to attend ASSET. The scholarship details are at https://sigmobile.org/mobisys/2016/grant.php and will be awarded on a per-need basis with the majority of the funds planned to go to students who have limited other sources of funding and who have never attended conferences such as MobiSys before. We are also offering a limited number of scholarships for junior faculty and post-docs who need financial support to attend MobiSys. There are also a few US-based student-only scholarships offered by the US National Science Foundation. 3) As part of ASSET, we have lined up world-class researchers to present topics of interest to the ASSET attendees. In particular, we have managed to convince *3 SIGMOBILE Rock Star* winners, Professor Suman Bannerjee, Profession Lin Zhong, and Professor Romit Roy Chowdhury, to present at ASSET. http://www.sigmobile.org/awards/rsa.html In addition, Professor Nigel Davies, the steering committee chair of the HotMobile workshop has also agreed to present. Thus, students attending ASSET will have *career changing* opportunities to improve their research, build and improve their peer networks, and to interact and learn from top researchers from around the world. To ease the burden of attending, we have planned to provide numerous travel and registration grants on a per-need basis. The deadline for this research proposal is May 9th 2016 2359 hrs Anyone on Earth (AOE) timezone. However, what we expect is just a best effort submission and not a perfect submission. The goal of ASSET is to *help students improve*. Thus, we will be very generous in accepting their research proposals (the grammar, structure, content etc. does not need to be perfect). If a little more time to submit a proposal is needed, please let me know. We have some leeway (just a few days only though) here as well. JOB DESCRIPTION Research Coordinator, Digital Financial Services Computer Science & Engineering University of Washington As part of a Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF)-funded project in Digital Financial Services, the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at University of Washington is seeking a Research Coordinator. The Digital Financial Services (DFS) Research Group was formed to investigate technologies that will improve the ability of banks and mobile operators to deploy digital financial products that reach the poor. The research group is led by Professor Richard Anderson and includes Professors Yoshi Kohno, Franziska Roesner, and Kurtis Heimerl in Computer Science & Engineering, and Professor Josh Blumenstock in the Information School. The project aims to develop and deploy technological solutions to specific challenges that impede the introductions and wide scale deployment of these financial products. Low profitability, lack of client demand, and the outright failure of many DFS launches can be traced back to difficult barriers and frictions that hinder the business model and scalability of DFS systems. Challenges that have been identified include fraud and cyberattacks, network failures, the proximity payments user experience, managing identity and on-boarding, the lack of analytics for product development and risk scoring, agent management, and financial education for end users. The Research Coordinator will support and coordinate with a group of four faculty, graduate and undergraduate students, a postdoctoral fellow, external visitors, and departmental fiscal staff. The group's activities will include assessing the usability and security of financial technologies, developing tools to support introduction of financial products, managing financial services data sets, and conducting technology assessments. The group will be producing a series of research reports in addition to developing prototype technologies for field deployment. The Research Coordinator will be responsible for group coordination, managing external partnerships, supporting evaluation studies, creating a communication strategy, managing publications, and communications including grant- and report-writing. This position will not be responsible for financial tracking or budgets. Reporting to Professor Richard Anderson, this position will be responsible for the following: Research Group Coordination * Provide overall coordination of the research team. Ensure effective and efficient team functioning. * Manage team communication, provide regular study updates. * Coordinate research team meetings to be held on a regular and as-needed basis including coordinating scheduling, creating and carrying out agendas, preparing meeting documents, and creating and maintaining related meeting documentation. * Act as a change agent in developing and implementing process change within the research team. * Prepare human subjects applications for product testing; responsible to ensure that the DFS research program is consistent with ethical standards and other regulations. * Develop forms, questionnaires, and procedures for collecting and summarizing observations and data. Communications * Oversee the communications strategy for the group. Develop and implement goals, priorities, and approaches that will showcase the group's work and promote the results of the project to provide technological solutions for improving the deployment of digital financial products for the poor. * Maintain the group's website, update content, write new content, and solicit submissions from others. * Prepare research reports and progress reports. Write administrative reports for funding agencies, primarily for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Assist in writing the annual report. * Prepare presentations and manuscripts for peer-review publication. * Play a major role in preparing grant applications and submissions, including literature review, drafting background and methodological content, budget justifications, draft of grant figures and tables, completion of grant submission forms, and copy editing. External & Third-Party Relations * Act as a liaison between the DFS group, program partners, research study sites, funding agencies, and other relevant administrative departments and agencies. * Maintain communications with external partners. * Track research of external researchers and organization that is relevant to the group's activities. Requirements: * Bachelor's degree in international development, economics, public policy, or related area AND at least two years of applicable experience. * Excellent verbal and written communication skills; capable of producing high-quality written documents. * Fluency in English * Strong project management skills; demonstrated success managing multiple projects. * Three months' experience working on a global development project while living in a developing country. * Ability to effectively bridge communication between technical research staff at UW, funding staff at Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and third parties. * Computer proficiency with intermediate skills or higher in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Google docs. Desired * Master's degree in international development, economics, public policy, or related area. * Project experience with mobile banking or microfinance. Conditions: The position may involve international travel, possibly one or two international trips per year.

As I mentioned, we are trying to put a team of 3-5 under the mandate of WAHO. They would be a combination of software engineers, business analyst, health informatics experts, and a team lead. We are looking to add in a fellowship component for young software engineers that would act as a pipeline to fill the future team, and to provide additional training. We are currently looking to hire someone (likely as a consultant, based in West Africa) who has the ability to set this team up correctly, identify people to hire, and work with our team and WAHO to scope the project. The person would have the ability to really influence and design the way the team moves forward. There would be a strong likelihood that after setting up the team, this person could act as Technical Team Lead on the initial team. We picture this person to be mid- or advanced-career, software developer who is now business analyst level (ability to translate tech requirements, manage clients, etc.) Ideally this person would also have experience working in West Africa. We hope you'll join us for this brown bag lunch discussion! * When: Thursday, April 21, 2016 * Time: 12-1pm * Where: UW, Bloedel Hall 070A (lower-level conference room) Twitter and Political Rebranding in the Global South: The Case of Narendra Modi Social media such as Twitter and Facebook are increasingly used as a means of political communication by political leaders around the world. In over 30 low- and middle-income countries, both the head of government and primary opposition leader have significant social media campaigns. In this talk, we explore the factors that make social media an attractive form of outreach for political leaders, examining the case of one of the most successful social media campaigns - that of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. With over 18 million followers on Twitter and over 32 million "likes" on Facebook, Modi has a means of directly reaching the citizenry or addressing the mainstream media through social media channels. His rise on social media offers an important example on political brand management, we discuss specific outreach strategies and how these have evolved overtime. We examine the frequency, tenor, and popularity of messages, the evolution of thematic discussions, and the use of political metaphor in Modi's sharpening of a new populist discourse as leader of an aspirational, global India. About Joyojeet: Joyojeet Pal is an assistant professor at the University of Michigan's School of Information where his work focuses on user experience and accessibility in low- and middle-income countries. His recent research looks at the use of social media in political communication in India, specifically on the role of political branding online in India.
