I was hoping to have an opportunity to let your students know about opportunities to work internationally with the Peace Corps. The best way we've found to target students has been through short presentations. Myself and a Seattle Regional Recruiter will be doing class presentations on campus from Oct 18th-20th. These will only take about 5-10 minutes and will consist of a general overview of Peace Corps, what we do and where we are, and also the benefits of serving. These short presentations can take place at the beginning or end of class, whichever is most convenient. We are currently in *much* need of internationally minded applicants with a background in engineering who have an interest in living and working in the developing world. Throughout Peace Corps’ 50 year history the University of Washington has been a strong source for quality volunteers. We are hoping to continue that legacy. Undergraduates in Change might be interested in this student competition being held by Global Health Nexus: *“Be the Change” *is a student competition for high school, community college and *undergraduate* students in Washington state to create solutions, awareness and innovation in global health. This competition is sponsored by Global Health Nexus and is being held during the 2011-2012 school year. Teams of students will design projects using technology, social media, the arts and more. Fall 2011 Change Seminar

Hello Everyone, In preparation for the 2011 fall quarter, I wanted to invite you all to register for the one credit Change Seminar (Course number: CSE590C1, SLN: 12464). The seminar is held on Thursdays at 12pm in the Paul Allen Center (Room 203). Change (http://change.washington.edu) is a group of faculty, students, and staff at the UW who are exploring the role of information and communication technologies (ICT) in improving the lives of underserved populations, particularly in the developing world. We cover topics such as global health, education, micro finance, agricultural development, and general communication, and look at how technology can be used to improve each of these areas. This fall we will be alternating between talks by invited speakers and group discussions. Those who sign up for credit will be asked to participate in leading one of the discussions (this requires very little work and can be done in groups). Tides Pizzigati Prize will award $10,000 to an open source software developer whose work is helping nonprofits succeed. Nominations have now opened for the sixth annual Antonio Pizzigati Prize for Software in the Public Interest, the nation's highest honor for software developers working with nonprofits to help advance innovative social change. Tides is now accepting nominations for this year's $10,000 prize through October 31. What Women Want: An Evidence-Based Approach to Innovative Maternal Health Care in Africa Our project, "What Women Want: An Evidence-Based Approach to Innovative Maternal Health Care in Africa" is seeking a project associate to manage data collection for an evaluation that is ready to launch. The project is designed as a first step in evaluating the health impacts of a start-up social enterprise, Jacaranda Health, which aims to deliver affordable, high quality reproductive, maternal, neonatal and child health care to poor urban women in Nairobi, Kenya . It combines business, social and clinical innovations to create a self-sustaining and scalable chain of clinics. PIs include Jessica Cohen, Margaret McConnell and Priya Agrawal (Harvard School of Public Health). The project is being administered by HSPH and our partner Jacaranda Health. The project associate would live and work in Nairobi, working closely with the partners to conduct a pre-post survey of pregnant women and an audit of delivery facilities. In addition to managing project operations, the project associate would also coordinate the development of new research agendas surrounding mobile financial services with the partner organization. This is an ideal opportunity for someone who seeks to acquire experience with managing field projects and is interested in quality of care and health service provision. The ideal candidate will be a graduate student with knowledge of Stata, previous experience with collecting or analyzing survey data as well as experience with large scale logistics operations in a developing world context. We are looking for someone who could start immediately, as of September 2011 and could work until December 2011 and possibly beyond. Responsibilities would include: • Hiring and managing a team of surveyors • Helping to develop an audit of health facilities • Hiring and managing a team of auditors • Organizing sampling and surveying in the slums of Nairobi • Supporting the administration of the survey via cell phones. • Managing incoming data • Developing new projects in collaboration with PIs and partners If interested please send a resume to Margaret McConnell (mmcconne(a)hsph.harvard.edu)
