TASCHA TALK: Joe Sullivan November 3, 2011, from 3:45 to 4:45 pm Roosevelt Commons Building Fourth floor multi-purpose room In September 2011, members of TASCHA, Mozilla, Aspiration Technology, and the East West Management Institute convened “Open Cambodia 2011″- an un-conference to mobilize makers/doers in Cambodia. The event brought together more than 100 open-source technologists, human rights activists, and civil society representatives to share their work and experiences. This TASCHA talk will report on projects and issues that were featured at the conference and the latest development in nonprofits, libraries, and development in Cambodia. About the presenter Joe’s research interests include visual communication, evidence, design thinking, and evaluation, especially in community technology settings. He has explored themes of employability, youth, social development, philanthropy, organizational development, and design. Joe is completing a Masters degree in Human Centered Design and Engineering<http://hcde.uw.edu/> and holds a Masters of Public Administration<http://evans.washington.edu/> degree from the University of Washington. TASCHA TALK: Araba Sey and Chris Rothschild October 27, 2011, from 3:45 to 4:45 pm Roosevelt Commons Building, 4311 11th Ave NE Fourth floor multi-purpose room The Global Impact Study surveys were designed to collect comparable data on uses and outcomes of public access ICT use in five countries on three continents. This TASCHA Talk will reflect on a range of research design and project management issues encountered during various stages of the survey project. About the presenters Araba is the research lead for TASCHA's Global Impact Study. She is interested in the social and economic implications of information and communication technologies in developing countries. Araba holds a PhD in Communication. Chris is a Research Analyst working on the Global Impact Study. His research focus is on the impact of information access users and non-users of technology venues. Chris holds Master's degrees in Public Administration and International Studies. TASCHA Talks are bi-weekly sessions to share, discuss, and advance new ideas around topics related to technology and social change. We welcome submissions of demonstrations for ICTD 2012, hosted at the Georgia Institute of Technology. The ICTD 2012 demo session will provide researchers and practitioners with an international audience at a spectacular venue for showcasing demonstrations of their work. A demonstration may span novel hardware or software systems, video footage, or physical artifacts. Research projects, commercial tools, or government initiatives may all be demonstrated. Engaging, interactive demos that demonstrate real world impact are encouraged. At least one author of each accepted demo must register for the conference and attend to present the demo. Authors of accepted papers and posters are invited to also propose demonstrations of their work. Important Dates November 7th, 2011 Demo abstracts due November 21st, 2011 Demo acceptance notifications January 16, 2012 Camera-ready abstracts March 12-15, 2012 Conference dates Submission Instructions Demo participants must submit a 1-page abstract (through the online submission form) that describes the context, novelty, and significance of the demonstration, including a precise description of exactly what is to be demonstrated (hardware, software, etc.) along with the demonstrator’s technical requirements (power, internet, setup, space, etc.). Each submission should include a title; the names, affiliations, and contact emails for all authors; as well as a brief abstract (~100 words). Acceptance notifications will be emailed on November 21st, 2011. Tablets in Education: The $35 Aakash tablet in India

This Thursday at Change we will have a discussion hosted by Rahul Banerjee and Dylan Price on the use of tablets in Education, focusing specifically on the recent $35 Aakash tablet released in India. India recently introduced a cheap tablet computer, saying it would deliver modern technology to the countryside to help lift villagers out of poverty. The computer, called Aakash, or "sky" in Hindi, is the latest in a series of "world's cheapest" innovations in India that include a 100,000 rupee ($2,040) compact Nano car, a 750 rupee ($15) water purifier and $2,000 open-heart surgery. Developer Datawind is selling the tablets to the government for about $45 each, and subsidies will reduce that to $35 for students and teachers. In comparison, the cheapest Apple iPad tablet costs $499, while the recently announced Kindle Fire will sell for $199. Datawind says it can make about 100,000 units a month at the moment, not nearly enough to meet India's hope of getting its 220 million children online. Human Resources Development Minister Kapil Sibal called the announcement a message to all children of the world. "This is not just for us. This is for all of you who are disempowered," he said. "This is for all those who live on the fringes of society." Interested in a MS in ICTD?

The ATLAS Institute at the University of Colorado at Boulder is actively seeking students who wish to combine technology and international development for its Masters of Science in Information and Communication Technology for Development (MS-ICTD). The MS-ICTD program is the first stand-alone ICTD master’s degree in the US, and is welcoming applicants for the 3rd cohort. The first two cohorts are currently spending practicum semesters with ICTD organizations, development agencies and high tech companies, including work in Africa, South Asia, Latin America, and depressed communities in the US. The program aims to attract students from a variety of backgrounds for a three-semester residency program and a semester-long fieldwork practicum.
