[Reminder] Change Seminar 5/9: Rebecca M. Jonas - Centering Culture in Digital Literacy Education: Lessons from Rural Appalachia

Hi everyone! Quick reminder that for tomorrow's Change seminar (May 9th), we will be hearing from Rebecca M. Jonas (she/her). Rebecca's talk is titled "Centering Culture in Digital Literacy Education: Lessons from Rural Appalachia". *Description* In building and deploying a digital storytelling system to teach digital literacy skills to rural Appalachians, we discovered key opportunities and challenges to promoting digital literacy in this region. We identified that the importance of storytelling in Appalachian culture made digital storytelling an effective means of teaching these skills to residents. However, the poor technology infrastructure at our study site posed challenges to our participants’ ability to use technology and learn new skills. In this talk, I will discuss key findings from a digital literacy research intervention in a small, rural Appalachian community. I will also present preliminary findings from ongoing ethnographic research on digital access and skills in the Appalachian region. She primarily employs qualitative methods to gain a deep, nuanced understanding of how people interact with technology. She is particularly interested in rural computing and understanding the unique experiences of rural technology users. In her dissertation research, she investigates intra-rural digital divides, which are digital inequalities present between and within rural communities. She is also developing and evaluating digital literacy education that is informed by cultural tenets of rural Appalachia. She is invested in understanding the ways that technology creates and perpetuates injustice and aims to remediate those injustices through transformative approaches to technology. Hi everyone! Join us tomorrow @ 12 PM for this week's Change Seminar talk! This talk is co-hosted with the wonderful folks at the UW Security and Privacy Research Lab. We will be hearing from Dr. Julia Slupska (She/They). Julia's talk is titled "Participatory Threat Modeling with Marginalized Groups". *Description* The needs of marginalised groups like migrant domestic workers (MDWs) are often ignored in digital privacy and security research. This talk introduces the method of participatory threat modelling (PTM) as a way to incorporate marginalised populations' experiences. PTM allows security researchers to work with groups to identify their own threats and mitigations, drawing on feminist and critical research methodology, particularly participatory design. Prior to joining Glitch, she completed a PhD in Cybersecurity at the Oxford Internet Institute at the University of Oxford. Her research focused on online safety in the context of intimate partner violence and coercive control. As a part of this research, she co-founded re:configure, a feminist research collective which organised digital security workshops with groups like survivors of image-based sexual abuse, environmental activists, and migrant domestic workers. She is interested in how feminist theories and methods—such as participatory action research and the ethics of care—can improve cybersecurity. She also organises with No Tech for Tyrants, an organisation working to sever the links between higher education, violent technology, and hostile immigration environments.
