Strengthening Information Society Research Capacity Alliance (SIRCA) III PHASE II CALL FOR PROPOSALS – OPEN DEVELOPMENT SIRCA III is a theory and capacity building research programme run by the SiRC (Singapore Internet Research Centre) that began in April 2015 and will run until May 2017. SIRCA III has already funded six projects led by teams of two senior researchers and/or practitioners to develop cross-cutting open development theoretical frameworks. This call seeks research proposals to empirically test these theoretical frameworks in developing countries in Asia, Africa, or Latin America. The purpose of the SIRCA III programme is to deepen our understanding as to whether, how, for whom, and in what circumstances the free, networked, public sharing of digital (information and communication) resources contribute towards (or not) a process of positive social transformation. The programme is organised into two phases, a theoretical phase (Phase I) and an empirical phase (Phase II). Dykki will be talking about his extensive experience with Open Source Health Workforce Informatics. *What:* Open Source for Global Health *When:* Tuesday, Feb 23 at 12pm *Where: *The Allen Center, CSE 203 *Speaker Bio: *Dykki Settle, who joined the Digital Health Solutions team as Deputy Director in June 2015, will build on PATH’s work bridging the gap between global health and how users learn and adopt information and communication technology (ICT), focusing on technical strategy development, overseeing project implementations, and solution assessment. Most recently, Settle served as the Director of Health Workforce Informatics at IntraHealth International. In that role, he led the design, development, and implementations of the iHRIS Suite of open-source health workforce information system software, the mHero health workforce mobile communications and coordination platform and other tools that are now being rolled out in global, regional and country programs worldwide. Settle has provided technical leadership in bringing together consortia focusing on health workforce information systems and ICT applications in developing countries, utilizing his open-source experience and expertise to support a global agenda in health technologies and approaches. He has led and supported global health informatics work around the world in more than twenty-five countries.

The topic of ICT for development is inherently multidisciplinary, and encompasses a broad array of research domains. The ACM DEV conference is an opportunity for researchers across these diverse domains to come together to work on the common problem of improving access to and availability of information and communication technology solutions. Papers should describe original and unpublished research. Three metrics will be applied to judge the submissions: (a) relevance of the problem for development; (b) novelty of the ideas; and (c) evaluation of the solution, making a case for development-focused impact. All DEV paper submissions should either provide or directly motivate a novel technical solution that has direct implications for development. Full papers must not exceed 10 pages (including references, figures, and tables). Call for Demos - ICTD 2016 The Eighth International Conference on Information and Communication Technologies and Development (ICTD2016), to be hosted at the University of Michigan from June 3-6, 2016 cordially invites proposals for demonstrations. ICTD2016 will provide an international forum for scholarly researchers to explore the role of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in social, political, and economic development. The demo session will provide students, researchers, and practitioners with an international audience for showcasing demonstrations of their work. The demo session will be given wide visibility and opportunities for interaction during the conference. Your demonstration may span novel hardware or software systems, or physical artifacts. Research projects, commercial tools, or government initiatives are all welcome. We particularly encourage engaging, interactive demos that demonstrate real world impact. While the topic for demonstrations may have been published previously, the demonstration itself should offer new insights and perspectives to the ICTD community. For consideration, an abstract of between 100-400 words describing the context, novelty, and significance of the demonstration must be submitted. Be as descriptive and precise as possible, detailing what exactly will be demonstrated. Also include the technical requirements for your demo (e.g., power, Internet access, space and other setup requirements). Each proposal should also include a demo title, as well as names, affiliations, and contact information for all authors. Demonstration proposals will be reviewed according to relevance to the conference. Learn how to design and carry out a research project to answer questions you have about the role of ICTs in socio-economic development, while also experiencing the realities of life in Ghana. You do not need to have research experience, and we welcome both graduate and undergraduate students. The program will be 4 weeks long and takes place from August 26 - September 25, 2016. Credits will be counted towards your Fall 2016 load. Students will receive 5 credits (INFX 598 or INFO 498). The course satisfies the research methods requirement for Informatics students (INFO 470) and qualifies as an elective for the International Development Certificate Program (IDCP).
