Hi All, A quick question: A Facebook friend Danay Paravisini (cc'ed) wants to know whether it is possible to solarize water pumps in Puerto Rico? Most survivors of hurricane Maria are now drinking and using non-potable water because there is no electricity to pump potable water. Could electric pumps be turned into solar pumps? Thanks, Yosem

Digital Financial Services (DFS) Workshop today! CSE 691, 1-6 pm

Dear Colleagues, The University of Washington's Digital Financial Services Research Group (DFSRG) will host a Digital Financial Services (DFS) Workshop on October 4th. This event will take place in the Gate's Commons in the Paul G. Allen Center for Computer Science and Engineering (CSE 691) between 1-4:45 pm, with a reception to follow from 5-6 pm. The goal of this workshop is to bring members of the DFS academic community together with industry partners to develop an agenda for successful collaboration on research and the dissemination of new technologies. We will also share some of our research team member's recent research results. The University of Washington's DFSRG focuses on developing technologies for people from resource constrained regions around the world to facilitate financial inclusion and alleviate poverty. More broadly, we collaborate with social scientists and industry partners, including the newly opened FinTech Center at Information Technology University in Lahore. Some of our current research highlights include an exploration of mobile money adoption and use by women in Pakistan, the implementation of digital agricultural directories to facilitate business transactions in Tanzania, and an evaluation of security within digital transactions. The UW DFS Workshop will highlight two panels: 1) "Gender and Mobile Money" with panelists Neha Kumar (Georgia Tech), Emer Dooley (UW Foster School of Business), Skye Gilbert (PATH), and Samia Ibtasam (UW CSE) and 2) "DFS Technologies" with panelists Ben Lyon (Caribou Digital), Heidi Stephens Metz (Imani), Kurtis Heimerl (UW CSE), and Sam Castle (UW CSE). We will feature talks from Himanshu Nagpal, the Interim Deputy Director for Financial Services for the Poor, at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; Jake Kendall, the Director of Digital Financial Services Innovation Lab, at Caribou Digital; and Joyojeet Pal, Assistant Professor, at the University of Michigan School of Information. Greetings! Please join us for the Change Seminar starting next week on *Tuesday 10/3/2017 in HUB 214 at 12-1 pm*. Change is an association of researchers broadly interested in technology as applied to global development, poverty alleviation, and social justice. This semester we will begin an exciting cross-campus collaboration involving faculty and students from TASCHA (Technology and Social Change) at the iSchool, Global WACh and I-TECH (International Training and Education Center for Health) at the Department of Global Health, the UW School of Nursing, and ICTD (Information and Communication Technologies for Development) at CSE. We hope that the presence of students and faculty from each of these groups will foster increased collaboration, fruitful discussion, and awareness of related projects and shared interests between groups. On 10/24 and 11/28 it will be held in the large conference room in the Harris Hydraulics building. -------------------------------------- This week, Naveena Karusala and Neha Kumar will be presenting their CSCW 2018 paper titled *Care as a Resource for Underserved Learning Environments* . *Who: *Naveena Karusala (UW) & Neha Kumar (Georgia Tech) *What:* Care as a Resource for Underserved Learning Environments *When:* Tuesday Oct 3 *Where:* 12pm in CSE 203 *Abstract: *We present results from an ethnographic inquiry of technology-based learning at an after-school learning center in Mumbai (India) that caters to students from neighboring slum communities. We conducted participant observation for 120 hours and 58 semi-structured interviews with different stakeholders (including teachers, staff, parents, and students) at the center over nine weeks from December 2015 to July 2016. Taking an assets-based approach in an underserved context, we uncover the role of care as a resource and present the rich and varied caring behaviors enacted in this sociotechnical system.We then discuss how care effects a greater sense of ownership, interdependency, and community. Examining the role of aligning values in motivating caring behavior, we conclude with recommendations for supporting, leveraging, and extending care via technology design in an underserved, technology-enhanced learning environment. *Bios: *This paper will be presented jointly by Naveena Karusala <https://nkarusala.wixsite.com/home/about> and Neha Kumar <http://www.nehakumar.org/>. Naveena is a first-year Computer Science PhD student at UW. She worked on this paper during her undergrad at Georgia Tech, where she was advised by Neha -- assistant professor doing research at the intersection of human-centered computing and global development (read HCI4D).
