Please join us for today's Change seminar with Cliff Schmidt! *Who:* Cliff Schmidt, of Amplio <https://www.amplio-network.org/> *When:* Tuesday, Mar 5, 12-1pm *Where:* CSE 203 *What:* Audio and Analytics: Strengthening Health Knowledge and Outcomes in Remote Communities *Abstract: *In the most isolated and remote communities in Ghana and Kenya, citizens face challenges in accessing credible, consistent information about their health, well-being, and rights. Low literacy combined with poor infrastructure, low nurse-patient ratios, and limited access to mainstream media are barriers to the development of thriving and resilient communities. To address these development challenges, Amplio Network’s partners in Ghana and Kenya leverage the Talking Book, a rugged, hand-held, battery-powered audio device, which provides on-demand access to information for people who can't read. Our partners use Talking Books to deliver targeted, behavior change messaging in the form of interviews, songs, and dramas in local languages and dialects, to inform, educate, and prompt rural communities to practice and adopt key behaviors to reduce poverty, generate demand for essential services, and improve community health and protection outcomes. A recent randomized control trial co-designed by UNICEF Ghana found that people with access to health messages on Talking Books were 50% more likely to use bed nets and 50% more likely to wash their hands with soap. *Bio* Cliff founded Amplio Network (formerly named Literacy Bridge) in 2007 to address global poverty and disease by making practical agriculture and health knowledge accessible to those who need it most. He led the development of an audio-based mobile device called the “Talking Book” for people with minimal literacy skills living in rural areas without electricity or Internet access. Cliff received the Microsoft alumni Integral Fellow Award presented by Bill and Melinda Gates twice (in 2010 and 2014) and was selected as a member of the Clinton Global Initiative by President Bill Clinton. He received the top prize at the Tech Awards in 2012 and Computerworld Honors in 2013 and was featured by the PBS Newshour as one of five Agents for Social Change in 2013. Prior to starting Amplio Network, Cliff was a software developer for Microsoft and a nuclear engineering officer for the U.S. Navy Submarine Force. Cliff holds a B.S. in cognitive science from MIT and an M.S. in computer science and engineering from the University of Washington. Cliff loves music and playing tenor saxophone.

Drawing on long term ethnography with demographic survey research projects in rural Malawi, the book tells the life story of quantitative health data, tracking and analyzing their transformation from pencil marks recorded on a survey page into statistics consumed by policy makers, researchers and the public. In this talk, I trace how demographers’ scientific investments in pure, clean data—symbolically represented in surveys that act as a recipe for data collection—are made and unmade by Malawian fieldworkers’ practices and processes on the ground. First, through close analysis of everyday data collection practices, I illustrate how frictions between epistemological metrics for data and the particularities of everyday fieldwork produce—and come to validate—the numerical evidence we use to understand the AIDS epidemic in Malawi. I focus, in particular, on the cultural translation of survey concepts such as probability, the techniques used by fieldworkers to uncover the truth of rural Malawian social realities, and researchers’ efforts to harmonize encounters between fieldworkers and research participants. Standards of data collection, I show, make stability and fixity in numerical representation possible, not despite but because of, their customization by fieldworkers in the field (here, I counter racialized suspicions that fieldworkers are liabilities and center their indispensability to making good numbers). I conclude by gesturing toward connections between my past and present research and reflecting on what anthropology might contribute to critical data studies in the age of Big (and small) Data. Bio Cal Biruk <cbiruk(a)oberlin.edu> is Associate Professor of Anthropology at Oberlin College. Cal is the author of Cooking Data: Culture and Politics in an African Research World (Duke U Press, 2018) and numerous articles in venues such as Medical Anthropology Quarterly, Journal of Modern African Studies, Critical Public Health and Critical African Studies. Her research and teaching interests are at the intersection of medical anthropology, critical data studies and global health studies. Her second book project, Fake Gays: Metrics, Ethics and Authenticity in African Aid Economies, draws on long term ethnographic work with an LGBT-rights NGO in Malawi to capture the relations and transactions that constitute diverse political, identity, and economic projects that play out within aid geographies in the global South. PacSci is recruiting for our now recruiting for our 30th cohort of our Science Communication Fellows. Below is more info about the program. Pacific Science Center ignites curiosity in all areas of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). For over a decade, our Science Communication Fellowship Program has been supporting this mission by helping local STEM professionals improve their communication skills and connect with the community. I am excited to announce that we are now accepting applications for the Spring 2019 cohort of this program. Accepted applicants will participate in Pacific Science Center’s Science Communication Course, an exciting professional development series focusing on effective public engagement with STEM. Fellows will also develop an interactive activity about their work with individualized coaching from Science Center staff and will have ongoing opportunities to interact with the public at outreach events. To enable participation among a wider community of STEM professionals, we have made a number of changes for this cohort, including scheduling all workshops for Saturdays and reducing the tuition cost. Additionally, we are pleased to be able to offer various partial and full tuition scholarships. The application deadline is March 4, 2019 (extended from 2/28).
