follow up to today's Change talk on Starbus Business Models

Thanks to those of you that came to today's talk. The Starbus project was really an exciting and challenging project for our marketing team and hopefully the lessons we learned will lead to more collaboration! I've attached the slides, as well as two quick follow up items: 1) To follow up on the question of *whether there are other "models" that apply to developing countries*, the person that comes to mind is Jaime Anderson who has written some great articles about his "4 As" model (supplementing the standard "7Ps" in today's slides). There's a few variations of this article (I've attached one of them), but they mostly focus on *Affordability, Acceptibility, Availability, and Awareness.** *It's a great/light read and covers anecdotes about Smart Telecom and Unilever. 2) I also pointed out the *two best ways to connect with the business school are *through: - The Center for Innovation and Entreprenuership<http://www.foster.washington.edu/centers/cie/Pages/cie.aspx>, the director is Connie Bourassa Shaw ( cbshaw(a)u.washington.edu ). They work with the business plan competition and connecting student groups to innovations within UW. - Tech Transfer <http://depts.washington.edu/techtran/>: They are usually the first people to talk to in order to capture intellectual output from UW research and attaches appropriate intellectual property rights so that UW inventions, copyrighted works and technical information is protected. They also are a great resource for building teams to work on projects. The semester may have come to a close, but this talk will hopefully be a fun and entertaining look at the process of taking a current Change research project and evaluating business models to support it. We will discuss a semester-long effort that took the Starbus work as the foundation for a marketing plan project at Foster Business School (for an Advanced Marketing class). The takeaways will include "What happens when research projects are vetted for profitability?", "What's the difference between ethnographic research and market research?", and "Which is harder: Talking to Kyrgyz marshrutka drivers or MBA students?" The Clinical Informatics Research Group is listing one or more RA positions for the summer quarter. The primary purpose of this position is to contribute technical expertise to research projects in the University of Washington Schools of Nursing, Medicine, and Public Health and Community Medicine, through development and implementation of web applications for the Clinical Informatics Research Group. This position will be responsible for developing, installing, and maintaining various Web software components and integrating them into projects such as a clinical assessment application using in-house electronic survey software. These components are generally cross-platform and include software development frameworks, databases (design and implementation), Web applications, Web servers, end-user query and reporting services, and communications libraries. The complexities of the position are driven by the goal of the group to create new and innovative research grade computing systems, and apply them to novel domains in clinical medicine and population health. The members of our team work closely, with complementary skills. Each project involves integrating technical and domain information in novel ways, and resourcefully developing new methods and approaches to problem solving. Required Qualifications: Requires knowledge of Web/Internet standards, hardware and software technologies, preferably in LAMP, but can include Java. Experience in application design and development. Experience with relational database technology, using MySQL, MS SQL Server, or equivalent. Experience in web development using PHP, Java, Perl, or equivalent. Experience using Unix/Linux operating systems, including Apache. Demonstrated ability to resolve technical problems in an independent manner.
