It aims to provide a global forum for all those with interests in the use of ICTs in development practice to meet to discuss the latest research advances in the field. This is a 4-day conference for academics, practitioners, policy makers, activists and business leaders. On day 2 and 3 there are papers, posters and demos, all peer-reviewed and selected as excellent contributions from across the disciplines. On day 1 and 4, there are over 40 open, participatory workshop sessions discussing everything from open access, media literacy and mobile phones in health and education, to Climate Change and ICT, gender, and ICT4D’s place in development theory. For a list of papers, posters, demos and sessions, see www.ictd2010.org There will be sessions run by key donors (including UNESCO, World Bank, UNCTAD, FAO, SPIDER, Finnish Foreign Ministry, GTZ, IDRC), two sessions in Spanish organised by Latin American colleagues, as well as training sessions in participatory design and participatory video. Keynotes will be given by Lidia Brito (Director of Science Policy Division, UNESCO) and Sir Tim Berners-Lee (Director, W3C, credited with inventing the World Wide Web). Our group has two Programmer Graduate RA positions open for autumn quarter, and potentially longer. Position Description: The primary purpose of this position is to contribute technical expertise to research projects in the University of Washington Schools of Nursing, Medicine, Global Health and Public Health for the Clinical Informatics Research Group. The individual in this position will use software development and relational database skills to assist in the implementation of health applications. The RA will participate in all phases of software development including requirements definition, coding, and testing. The RA will be responsible for evaluation, selection and application of standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria in developing and/or modifying complex designs of systems. Required Qualifications: Software developer experience and broad knowledge of Web/Internet standards, hardware and software technologies, preferably in Java and PHP. Experience with relational database technologies, such as Postgres, MySQL, Oracle, or SQL Server. Experience in application design and development. Experience in web development using PHP, Java, Perl, or equivalent. Experience using version control repository software, such as Subversion (SVN), CVS, VSS Demonstrated ability to resolve technical problems in an independent manner. Proven ability to quickly learn and apply new technologies. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor degree in Computer Science or equivalent Familiarity with healthcare delivery or clinical information systems. Future networked information systems will support, for example, clinical workflow, remote diagnosis and consultation, e-prescribing, and mobile data collection and surveillance, disease outbreak identification and patient participation in their own wellbeing and care. Mobile-computing technology may be particularly helpful in improving access to healthcare (geography, monetary and informational), by encouraging personal health management, and by enabling patient and provider mobility. Wearable medical devices are emerging, to measure essential vital signs like pulse, respiration, ECG, blood glucose level, and patient mobility. Handheld devices support clinicians in urban hospitals, and portable diagnostic kits allow remote healthcare teams to more easily reach rural villages. The widespread availability of mobile phones, and recent experiments with low-cost, long-range broadband wireless networks, bring connectivity to all these opportunities. We encourage papers that present novel ideas for networked computing technology in support of healthcare, and which are likely to invoke thoughtful discussion at the workshop. Research papers should focus on all aspects of networked healthcare technologies. Of interest, though not exclusively, are the following topics: - remote diagnosis and remote consultation - clinical applications of mobile or networked healthcare - mobile and wearable medical sensing applications - design of wearable and home-care health devices - sensor networks for public health monitoring and surveillance - networked mobile technology for rural healthcare - security and privacy in healthcare application - experience from technology deployments - usability of mobile health applications and devices - applications to emergency response and disaster response - cost-efficient and energy-efficient networking for remote healthcare - remote access to electronic health records Papers should be limited to 6 pages in IEEE format, not submitted concurrently elsewhere in any form, and present new contributions regarding either technology or experience in deploying technology. Our group has a User Interaction Developer research assistant position open for autumn quarter, and potentially longer. We are a group of faculty, staff and students working on domestic and global health informatics projects including syndromic surveillance for the CDC, the largest database of HIV treatment data in North America, and an open-source laboratory information system used around the world. Our team has solid back-end & data management skills; we're looking for someone who enjoys focusing on the front-end, preferably using evidence-based methodologies. Position Description: Responsible for the design, development, and implementation of graphical user interfaces for clinical and public health information systems supporting the Clinical Informatics Research Group (CIRG). * Front end web design and development using web technologies - i.e. CSS, Javascript, JSP, PHP, etc. * Evaluate, select, develop, and integrate user interaction methodologies to create complex systems in support of CIRG research activities * Conduct user interaction evaluation with project stakeholders and end users * Design and generate graphics using graphics editing software * Supporting documentation of design decisions for projects Required Skills * Front-end (user interface) web development (eg HTML, Javascript, CSS, etc) * Advanced cross-platform javascript and CSS (eg AJAX, JSON, JQuery, Prototype; etc) * Server-side generation of user interfaces (eg JSP, PHP, ASP, etc) * Demonstrated ability to resolve technical problems in an independent manner * Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English. volunteers sought for Spark MicroGrants

Spark MicroGrants (http://www.sparkmicrogrants.org/) is a new initiative that capitalizes on the potential of local innovators by hosting contests in which community members propose their own solutions to social problems. After selecting a winning proposal, Spark provides seed funding in the form of a small "microgrant". Past competitions have focused on water & sanitation, promoting safe pregnancies, and food security. Spark is seeking volunteers with computer skills to help create a new website to help manage MicroGrants. Please email info(a)sparkmicrogrants.org if interested. Spark is also seeking volunteers (with our without technical skills) to be Advocates for current projects in Rwanda and Uganda, including: - Karambe Village, Rwanda: People of Karambe Village have to walk 3-5 kilometers before they reach a tap that is often dry. They are currently designing a project to drill a well and water tank to improve access to water for the over 500 village members. - Wanteete Village, Uganda: Eighty women in Wanteete Village have come together to address their concerns about pre-primary education. Their children have to walk miles to over crowded classrooms and many do not have pre-primary education. Advocates are paired with the MicroGrant community of their choice and work remotely to support and promote their competition. Advocate responsibilities include: helping to raise the money for the community project; reviewing and commenting on proposals written by community members; advertising and promoting the grantee's heroic work in the press. No prior work experience is needed-only enthusiastic compassion! In addition to helping a community in need solve its own problems you will learn about a pressing issue for those living in extreme poverty, and get a ground-level view of how they can be addressed. The time commitment is approximately 2 hours per week for at least two months. Students can build class projects around MicroGrants. Although Advocates may have the chance to review grant submissions and discuss projects with experts in the field; Spark MicroGrants is really about enabling the community to define their own problem, design their own project and carry out the work for it.
