This Thursday at Change we will be hosting Undergraduate Research Day! Three CSE undergrads will be giving short presentations on their current research in ICTD. The presenters and projects are as follows: - *Jeff Beorse* will be talking about his work on the ODK Collect user interface. In the current interface, each question type has a single available appearance. Jeff is working on designing new display options, with a focus on organizing multiple choice questions more efficiently, especially when fitting multiple questions on a single page. His goal is to discover whether offering a few display options would allow users to create forms that are easier to understand and quicker to complete. - *YoonSung Hong* will be discussing his work on ODK Tables. ODK Tables is an application for hosting a relational database on a smart phone that supports SMS-based interactions and allows import/export of tables to other storage whether in the cloud or on another local computing device. The objective of ODK Tables is to lower barriers experienced by entrepreneurs or other information providers in the developing world to field their own information services. - *Krysta Yousoufian* will be discussing her work on the Smart Connect project. Smart Connect is a system that allows rapid communication to and from rural health clinics via SMS. Krysta has been working to develop a pilot application for Vietnam that provides vaccine stock management and and monitors the temperature of a vaccine refrigerator. The data is used to support Vestergaard Frandsen‘s campaign to distribute LifeStraw Family water treatment units to 4 million people in Western Kenya. Evan Thomas of Manna Energy writes, “ODK has enabled us to easily train 4,000 community health workers in how to use the smartphone application, and we are now getting records in at a rate of about 50 per minute [about 40,000/day]. We expect a total of over one million records by June 1, 2011. This project has broad reach. We even have an astronaut on the International Space Station who is monitoring the project via the ODK database.” We just found out Carbon For Water a few days ago, and we’ll be sharing more about their work over the next few weeks. I am hoping to recruit some students and/or faculty who be interested in helping with the planning of the Western Regional Health Conference. We as communications and technology professionals have an opportunity to create a portion of the Health Conference that would be dedicated to how Communication and Technology can create social change and specifically, how that change can impact global health. Here is the exact description from the Global Health Department… The 9th Annual Western Regional International Health Conference is looking for students with a background in Communications and/or Technology to participate on their student planning committee. This high-profile event occurs in collaboration with many other institutions across the region. The student committee is primary responsible for planning this large-scale conference from start to finish. The conference has attracted 750-1000 people in past years. This year's theme is: At a Crossroads: Setting a New Agenda for Global Health. There are 6 tracks in this conference, one of them being Navigating the Course: Communications and Technology. The student planning committee will primarily work in subcommittees and we will meet every other week on Mondays for an hour. In summer we will move our meetings to once a month, and resume meetings twice a month until the conference occurs in April 2012. Students will have the opportunity to work closely with advising faculty and work with other students from all over campus. Each track has at least one advising faculty to consult with regarding session ideas and speaker contacts. The goal is to meet every other week on Monday nights to form our segment for the event (only once a month over the summer). Even if you can't make it to every meeting I would love to get your contributions and involvment in helping develop our agenda for the event and help recommend speakers/topics. this is short notice, but kentaro toyama (of http://ict4djester.org/ fame) is giving a talk today downtown. kentaro is a great speaker and always has insightful things to say about technology and global development. ------- Session 1: Myths of Technology for International Development Speaker: Kentaro Toyama (University of California, Berkeley) The past decade has seen incredible interest in applying information and communication technologies for international development, an endeavor often abbreviated "ICT4D." Can mobile phones be used to improve rural healthcare? How do you design user interfaces for an illiterate migrant worker? What value is technology to a farmer earning $1 a day? Interventionist ICT4D projects seek to answer these kinds of questions, but the excitement has also generated a lot of hype about the power of technology to solve the deep problems of poverty. In this talk, I will (1) present several myths of ICT4D that persist despite evidence to the contrary, (2) offer a theory of "technology as amplifier" which explains the gap between rhetoric and reality, and (3) provide recommendations for successful ICT4D interventions. My hope is to temper the brash claims of technology with realism about its true potential. This Thursday at Change we will be hosting a talk by Jason Hahn, a Business Development Manager at the Grameen Foundation<http://www.grameenfoundation.org/>. Jason works to identify new opportunities to use Grameen’s products on behalf of the poor and poorest and support programs in the field. On Thursday, Jason will be speaking about Grameen’s current mobile programs to support agriculture, health, and financial services, with a particular focus on agricultural work. Currently Theme Leader of the Living Environments Laboratory at the Wisconsin Institutes for Discovery, Dr. Brennan received a Masters of Science in Nursing from the University of Pennsylvania and a PhD in Industrial Engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Following seven years of clinical practice in critical care nursing and psychiatric nursing, Dr. Brennan held several academic positions. She developed the ComputerLink, an electronic network designed to reduce isolation and improve self-care among home care patients and directed HeartCare, a web-based tailored information and communication service that helped home-dwelling cardiac patients recover faster, and with fewer symptoms. Dr. Brennan is National Program Director of Project HealthDesign, a RWJ-funded initiative designed to stimulate the next generation of personal health records. Additionally, she leads the WI-TECNE project, a statewide nursing faculty development effort supported by HRSA that will improve the integration of informatics and telehealth into nursing curricula. She is fellow of both the American Academy of Nursing (1991) and the American College of Medical Informatics (1993).
