The Vodafone Americas Foundation
(http://project.vodafone-us.com/about-the-project/) designed the
Wireless Innovation Project as a competition to promote innovation and
increase implementation of wireless related technology for a better
world.
This year, UW Change’s FoneAstra project was chosen as one of the
eight finalists.
FoneAstra (http://www.cs.washington.edu/homes/rohitc/foneastra.html)
integrates a temperature sensor probe with a commodity mobile phone to
ensure safe pasteurization of donor breast milk at human milk banks.
It is a low-cost accessory for mobile phones that provides continuous
temperature monitoring and real-time feedback to users during
pasteurization, and archives temperature-time data at a server for
remote review and audit. The total cost for the monitoring system will
be less than US$100, compared to commercial-grade pasteurizers, which
cost up to $12,000.
FoneAstra and PATH, recently received a Gates Grand Challenge
Exploration grant
(http://www.path.org/news/an111107-infant-nutrition.php) to deploy the
technology at human milk banks in South Africa. FoneAstra will help
ensure that the breast milk given to vulnerable infants is free of
bacteria and viruses, including HIV, while retaining its nutritional
value.

CSE, HCDE, and PATH) on being named a finalist for the Vodafone

I got an email today about TOMS One Day Without Shoes.
According to http://www.onedaywithoutshoes.com, today is "the day we
spread awareness of the impact a pair of shoes can have on a child’s
life by taking off our own. Why? Millions of children live without
proper footwear, exposing them to injury and disease every day."
I think this is a reasonable thing for our community to discuss, so
I've put my response to that email below. Any thoughts on One Day
Without Shoes or the TOMS model? I'd love some pushback...

As your friendly neighborhood global development cynic, I should point
out that in places I've worked (mostly East Africa), shoes are widely
available and very affordable. Even if shoes were not readily
available, going barefoot is the least of the concerns of folks who
live in these communities where health and employment are the biggest
problems. And so what makes this TOMS advertising campaign frustrating
to me is that it's been shown that donations of clothing and shoes
destroy economies in these very communities.
This year there was a campaign called "A Day Without Dignity" that
touched on some of these issues.
"Why has it become so easy for people to start feel-good campaigns
that no one asked for? There are a thousand things this village needs
and nowhere on the list are t-shirts and shoes..."

I do think it's important to raise awareness, but it's also important
to be cautious when it comes to issues of global development. It's
almost always more complicated than it seems.

I wanted to reach out to you about an upcoming event being put on by
City of Seattle, King County, and the State of Washington that I think
would be of interest to you and your students.
The first-ever Startup Weekend GOV is taking place at Seattle City
Hall on April 27-29th. Participants gather Friday evening to pitch
ideas for Web and mobile apps that integrate open government data sets
(http://data.seattle.gov, http://data.wa.gov and http://datakc.org)
improve public safety and/or generally improve the lives of Washington
residents. One Bus Away (http://onebusaway.org/) is a great example of
such an application. Everyone breaks into teams and designers,
programmers and non-technical teammates work at City Hall throughout
the weekend. On Sunday evening, every team demos their apps and a
panel of judges provides feedback. Seattle Channel will be filming the
event and government officials like WA CIO Bharat Shyam and Mayor Mike
McGinn, in addition to the city IT department, will be on hand to
answer questions and interact with teams.
Tickets are available at http://seattlegov.startupweekend.org. There
is special student pricing. The ticket includes food, snacks, and
drinks throughout the weekend in addition to event swag and unlimited
coffee.
There is also a FREE event at Seattle City Hall this Thursday, April
19th at 6pm with presentations by Google and Socrata (which powers all
the government data sets) on working with their respective APIs. Light
refreshments will be served, and there will be time for mingling with
some government officials and talking data sets afterwards. Register

To mark the centennial of the Rockefeller Foundation, we are seeking
the knowledge and innovative ideas that will solve problems for the
next 100 years.
CHALLENGE ORIENTATION
Innovative Ideas for Decoding Data, Irrigating Efficiency, and Farming
Now address key levers for change and will create significant impact.
What these ideas could look like is still largely unknown. The
Innovation Challenges are designed to discover and reward ideas that
show unique promise for addressing global needs from a variety of
geographies, perspectives, and contexts.
All challenge entrants will be competing for an accolade from The
Rockefeller Foundation. Additionally, fifteen challenge finalists will
be considered for up to nine, $100,000 grants and recognition at The
Rockefeller Innovation Forum.

Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) copyright license for content
published by the Bank, the most accommodating of all licenses offered
by Creative Commons. It allows anyone to distribute, reuse, and build
upon the Bank's published work, even commercially, as long as the Bank
is given credit for the original creation. The CC BY license helps the
Bank to maximize its impact while simultaneously protecting the Bank's
reputation and the integrity of its content.
The Open Knowledge Repository, the centerpiece of the policy, is the
new home for all of the World Bank's research outputs and knowledge
products. The Repository -- available at
http://openknowledge.worldbank.org - currently contains works from
2009-2012 (more than 2,100 books and papers) across a wide range of
topics and all regions of the world. This includes the World
