Just a reminder that we hope you will join Global WACh, GAPPS, the South Asia Center, and the Department of Global Health as we welcome Dr. Zulfiqar Bhutta for a lecture titled: "Social Determinants and the Impact of Community Based Approaches on Maternal and Newborn Health" with an overview of the topic and introduction of the speaker by Dr. Craig Rubens, Executive Director of GAPPS. Dr. Bhutta is highly regarded in the field of Maternal Child Health and is reported to be a highly engaging speaker so we are very excited to have him speak. A reception will follow in the Vista Caf with poster presentations from members of the Kizazi mentorship group and residents from the Global Health Pathways Program. CIRG builds open source, web-based clinical and public health information systems. Our work ranges from laboratory information systems used in developing countries to patient-reported outcome tools for cancer and HIV patients. Depending on the skills and interests of the student, the responsibilities of the position could range from redesigning the CIRG site, to working on web apps for us-based or global health settings, to conducting remote usability studies. Hours are flexible. Looking for a motivated, problem-solving student with skills in some (or all) of these areas: Front-end web design and development - HTML/CSS/Javascript UI/UX design and prototyping - Mock-up and build interaction with a focus on improving user experience and employing best practices. Usability research and testing - Work with CIRG team on evaluating current systems and developing strategies usability testing, particularly with remote locations. Content strategy and writing - Remake CIRG’s public-facing information site. Write about our various projects in a way that’s appealing to potential funders, collaborators, etc. Graphic design - Assist in updates visual elements of CIRG software & various project web sites. Dr Grace John-Stewart

This week at Change we will be hosting Dr Grace John-Stewart from the UW Department of Global Health. Dr. John-Stewart trained as an internist and pediatrician prior to specializing in infectious diseases, and received a PhD in epidemiology. Her research is focused on international HIV-1 studies, primarily based in Kenya. These include studies of transmission, prevention, clinical epidemiology, clinical trials, and molecular epidemiology. She is currently the Director of the CFAR International Core, Kenya Research Program, and UW Global Center for Integrated Health of Women, Adolescents and Children (Global WACh). Dr. John-Stewart received the Elizabeth Glaser Scientist Award, has mentored over 60 students/fellows, received a K24 Mentorship Award, was nominated for the UW post-doctoral mentorship award and received a UW School of Medicine mentorship award. UW Plans Mobile App for Gay Men at Risk for HIV

Using Emerging Opportunities Grant funds of up to $15,000 from the UW Center For AIDS Research, UW Medicine will engage with a vendor who according to contracting documents will be asked to integrate the app with the Seattle Gay Scene (SGC) website’s newsfeed and calendar as well as their Facebook and Twitter accounts. USDA Invites Applications for Grants to Provide Broadband Service to Remote Rural Communities

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced that USDA is accepting applications through the Community Connect Broadband program for grants to provide broadband service to residents of remote, rural communities. Community Connect grants are made available to the most rural, unserved and economically challenged areas. The funds are used to build broadband infrastructure. Awardees are also required to establish community centers that offer free public access to broadband. Applications must be received by June 18, 2012.
