A few UW Change members (myself included) will be on a Doctors Without Borders panel this Thursday in Seattle. The event is free, open to the public, and fully accessible. It should be an interesting discussion! > Description Applying the latest digital tools to humanitarian responses and global health projects has always been difficult due to persistent challenges like remote locations, unreliable electricity, and underdeveloped communications infrastructure. Increasingly, however, there have been applications, platforms, and database sharing innovations that have been successfully deployed in places like Haiti, Peru, Rwanda, and other contexts. Join us for a discussion moderated by KUOW's Ross Reynolds. Jill Woelfer on Homeless young people and technology: Ordinary interactions, extraordinary circumstances.

This Tuesday at Change, Jill Woelfer will present her research on Homeless young people and technology: Ordinary interactions, extraordinary circumstances. Homeless young people, aged up to 30, have ordinary interactions with technology that are conditioned by the extraordinary circumstances of homelessness. In this talk, I will give an overview of 5 years of research investigating the experiences that homeless young people have with information systems such as Facebook and technologies such as mobile phones and music players. I will conclude with work-in-progress findings from my dissertation research – a study of the role of music in the lives of homeless young people in Seattle and Vancouver, BC and associations that may exist between music and risk-taking behaviors. Jill Palzkill Woelfer is a PhD Candidate in Information Science at the University of Washington Information School and she is affiliated with the Canadian Studies Center at The Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies. Jill is the 2012 recipient of the University of Washington Graduate School Medal, a 2011-2012 Fulbright Fellow to Canada and a 2010 Google US Anita Borg Memorial Scholar. Her research with homeless young people has appeared in the Journal of the American Society for Information Science and Technology, Children and Youth Services Review, Personal and Ubiquitous Computing, and the Association for Computing Machinery’s interactions magazine. She has also published at conferences, including a paper at the annual conference of the International Society for Music Information Retrieval and four papers that have appeared at the SIGCHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems. Professor Dan Schwartz on Tribal partnership projects: A model for community-based renewable energy research.

This Tuesday at Change, Professor Dan Schwartz will talk about his work on community-based renewable energy research. Since 2008, a diverse group of UW Ph.D. students from the colleges of engineering, environment, and built environment have worked with the Yakama Nation and Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes to explore the ecologic, economic, and societal implications of renewable energy. These Columbia River Basin tribes seek to manage natural resources on their ~1.2 million acre reservations to meet the needs of current and future generations. Our main focus has been on bioenergy as a tool to address the economic, ecologic, and societal aspects of western forests that are no longer resilient to disturbances (fire, insects, drought, etc). Community-based renewable energy research is described via 2 tribal case studies. I then will describe the development of the "pyrolysis blanket" a radically simple technology innovation that was created to address a need found in all the remote and resource-limited communities where we worked. Tribal partnership projects are now being developed across nine Northwest Universities as part of the Northwest Advanced Renewables Alliance, the largest research grant every awarded by the USDA. Professor Daniel Schwartz the Chair of the Chemical Engineering Department at the University of Washington. His main research interests lie in electrochemical nanoscience and microtechnology. These interests date back to the mid-1980s, when he got his first cleanroom experience at Cybernex Corp, now part of Western Digital. In recent years, Dan has become interested in the ways that technology, economics, ecology, and people interact to define the success or failure of renewable energy projects. He leads NSF and USDA-sponsored Ph.D. training programs that explore these interactions in partnership with several Northwest Native American tribes. The Global Impact Study is pleased to announce the release of the Mobile Internet in-depth study<http://www.globalimpactstudy.org/in-depth-studies/mobile-internet/> research report, Public access, private mobile: The interplay of shared access and the mobile Internet for Teenagers in Cape Town. Led by Marion Walton<http://www.globalimpactstudy.org/author/marionwalton/> of the University of Cape Town and Jonathan Donner<http://www.globalimpactstudy.org/author/jonathandonner/> of Microsoft Research India, this study assesses and describes the interplay between public PC-based Internet access and private mobile-based access for urban teenaged public access venue users in Cape Town. South Africa is a particularly fruitful "leading edge" environment to do this work since not only mobile use, but specifically mobile Internet use, is increasingly common even among resource-constrained young people. Walton and Donner combined quantitative surveys with open-ended interviews of users and public access venue operators. Discussion is structured around five claims: 1. Public access and private mobiles offer different affordances, and teenage users have developed complex, fine-grained practices which help them to negotiate the respective strengths and weaknesses of the affordances. 2. The public access venue provides non-substitutable impact to resource-constrained users, even those with "the Internet in their pocket." 3. Public access supports the development of digital literacies associated with hyperlinked media and large-format documents, while mobile access supports everyday social literacies and messaging. 4. Teens can use a combination of mobile and public access Internet resources to participate in networked media production and grassroots economic mobilization. 5. Public access venue operators can improve venue rules and skills to encourage the complementary use of the mobile Internet.
