Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, and graduate students at a U.S. university. Indonesia is a fascinating country of global developmental significance, and is located in one of the most vibrant regions of the world. USAID/Indonesia is a key partner in supporting development in Indonesia. The selected candidate will serve as an intern for a term of up to four months. Modest compensation, transportation, and housing will be provided under the program. IBM Watson for Africa

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-26065991 IBM's Watson in Africa to Help Solve Problems BBC News (02/06/14) IBM has launched Project Lucy, a 10-year, $100 million initiative to leverage IBM's Watson supercomputer to give Africa a boost in agriculture, education, health, and other areas. Under Lucy, universities will have an opportunity to connect to the cloud-based system, and those with very limited computer resources will be able to link via smartphones or portable devices with Internet connectivity. The supercomputer uses artificial intelligence to analyze vast amounts of data and also can understand human language. Participants in the project will be able to ask Watson questions and receive answers, such as the best treatment for an individual patient. "It is also able to reason," says Uyi Stewart, chief scientist of IBM Research in Africa. "One if its key functions is natural language processing." Stewart says Lucy could transform education and health in Africa in much the same way that mobile banking has transformed finance. "With the adoption of mobile phones, banking has become virtual and it could be the same premise in education and healthcare," Stewart says. IBM is tweaking Watson to deliver relevant bite-sized chunks of information. University of Lagos professor Rahamon Bello says access to a supercomputer could help Africa "leapfrog other economies."

This week three students working with Days for Girls Bridges will talk about their experiences with the Global Social Entrepreneurship Competition Competition. *Abstract* Days for Girls Bridges provides sustainable feminine hygiene solutions, while creating income-generation opportunities in Kenya and Uganda. DfG Bridges is a for-profit, wholly-owned subsidiary of Days for Girls International, a 501(c)3. DfG Bridges' hygiene kits are washable, breathable, leak-proof, and last for up to three years. In addition to hygiene kits in Kenya, DfG Bridges also supports production of crafts, such as tote bags, laptop cases, and aprons, in Uganda. Crafts are sold in the US. The focus on two revenue streams allows DfG Bridges to provide hygiene kits at a price affordable to consumers in Kenya, as well as support education and training programs for Days for Girls International. *About the Speakers* The members of DfG Bridges are: Leah Spelman, Kate Faoro, and Lilliane Ballesteros. All three are first-year graduate students in the Evans School of Public Affairs at UW. Leah, Kate, and Lilliane will speak about their experience with the Global Social Entrepreneurship Competition, and where they hope to go next with the project.
