New report on the WSIS ICT Targets - Achievements, Challenges, & the Way Forward

The Final WSIS Targets Review: Achievements, Challenges and the Way Forward was launched at the occasion of the WSIS+10 High Level Event, in Geneva, Switzerland. The smartphone will be the first computing device that the unconnected will eventually own, becoming their gateway to the internet. The likes of Facebook's internet.org<http://internet.org> and Google's Project Loon are already doing commendable work to connect the unconnected. Making internet access affordable, expanding infrastructure and optimizing data requirements are some of the initiatives being worked on. But there's a gap here: all these are 'supply side' efforts, in that they intend to increase the supply of the internet (in economic terms). What's missing are demand side efforts: creating demand among the unconnected for mobile internet and basic internet services such as search engines, social networking, multimedia, knowledge portals etc. In other words, the unconnected will need to be shown WHY and HOW the internet can enable improvement in their lives, for them to want to effectively onboard on to it. If the demand for internet is bolstered successfully in line with its supply, we can connect the 4.3 billion unconnected in an economically sustainable way. You are invited to the: CSE481K Designing Technology for Low-Resource Settings (the ICTD Capstone) POSTER AND DEMO SESSION Monday, June 9, noon-1:30 in the CSE Atrium Each winter and spring, students design and prototype technology solutions to problems motivated by issues encountered in low-resource settings. This year four groups worked on projects related to vaccine cold chain management: *DashTricks: Tablet for District Manager - Tanzania * DashTricks is an Android tablet application that provides district immunization managers in Tanzania with a dashboard for monitoring the performance of key immunization indicators in health facilities in their districts. Our project aims to give district managers a sense of ownership over their data to help them realize problems and make better vaccine management decisions intuitively and correctly. *IcePAK: Tablet for National Manager - Pakistan * IcePAK is a mobile application focused on vaccine cold chain management in Pakistan. It's goal is to integrate large amounts of data into easily consumable forms, enabling decision makers and managers to allocate resources effectively. High visibility of problem areas, and automated allocation recommendations, allows these at risk locations to recognized early and dealt with efficiently. *More Practice: Training App for Laos * We are developing a tablet-based training application that will be used to train health workers in Laos. The initial purpose of the application is to train workers on how to use an SMS-based vaccine stock reporting system, but it will be used for other training in the future. Some of the challenges this group has faced: designing for potentially non-technical users, creating an extensible application for future training needs, and simplifying the application update and synchronization process. * **SMS Immunization Manager ** *** The SMS Immunization Manager (SIM) is an easy-to-install and easy-to-customize system that allows community health workers to report information about the vaccine cold chain (such as fridge temperature and condition) by SMS rather than paper forms. SIM's main features include robust SMS-based operations that correctly handle even poorly-formatted messages and a moderation web application for administrators to review the system's operation. The system will be deployed in Laos in the coming months and possibly to other countries after. Poverty Economist Consultant Position at World Bank Group

The Poverty Global Practice of the World Bank invites applications for a short-term poverty economist position. The position is for 150 days, starting around September 1and paying roughly $300 per day net of tax. The job entails co-authoring a paper that will produce and cross-validate small-area estimates of poverty in Pakistan, with primary responsibility for the empirical analysis. The ideal candidate is an excellent programmer with experience in econometric modelling in Stata in addition to strong writing skills. Familiarity with Pakistan and C or Mata programming are pluses. He or she is either a recent PhD, or a graduating PhD student with advisor approval, from a economics, statistics, or computer science department ranked in the top 100 worldwide.
