Post One will be in the general area of the History of Technology and Communications; Post Two will be in the areas of Surveillance, Media and Politics. This project is co-directed by Professor John Naughton, an engineer with a long-standing interest in the public understanding of technology, and Professor David Runciman, a political theorist with an interest in democracy and political change. It will explore the implications for democracies of the forces now bearing down on them. The first phase of the project involves: an assessment of the extent to which the confluence of contemporary forces is indeed unprecedented; whether it heralds a significant moment of transition for democratic societies; and, if so, what shape(s) that transition might take. Each Research Associate will report to the project co-directors and be expected to work under their direction to develop (in the case of Post One) an historically-informed assessment of the democratic implications of digital technologies and (in the case of Post Two) an informed analysis of the political economy of a networked society. The RAs will be required to participate in the regular work-in-progress meetings of the project as well as attend termly workshops that will bring RAs from a number of projects together. These include other projects in the Centre for Digital Knowledge and the Leverhulme Conspiracy and Democracy Project. They will also be involved in designing the web output of the project and constructing and maintaining a repository of the data and publications generated in the course of the research. The successful candidates will hold a PhD in a relevant field of research and an ability to work in collaborative environments. The Person Profile of each post is detailed in the Further Information. I'm attending the conference, Collaborations for Cause (http://www.blueearth.org/conference/2014/index.cfm) on Friday, 9/26-Saturday, 9/27 of this week in Seattle at the Impact Hub. The conference is all about digital storytelling, creating compelling and innovative content based on research and science, and engaging folks about complex and overlooked issues. Some of the presenters include National Geographic photographers, documentary film-makers, social media experts, and online community managers from a wide variety of organizations. I just found out from one of the organizers that they need volunteers for the conference (which I think would get you in to the conference for FREE :)). Deadline Oct 1. The University of Michigan School of Information (UMSI) announces the second Call for Proposals for the UMSI Global Information Engagement Program. Through this program, organizations in India, working on issues that are relevant to technology and society, can partner with the University to build a tool or resource or study an issue over a seven-month engagement. The University will match a team of 2-4 graduate students to work on a problem defined by the organization. The students will first work on the problem for one semester at the university, following which they will spend between 6-12 weeks on the ground in India continuing their work on the ground. We cover topics such as global health, education, micro finance, agricultural development, and general communication, and look at how technology can be used to improve each of these areas. To: "tier(a)tier.cs.berkeley.edu" <tier(a)tier.cs.berkeley.edu> Dear colleague, "*From the Bottom Up: How Small Producers and Mini-Grids Can Deliver Electrification and Renewable Energy in Africa" *is a useful realistic guide recently published by the World Bank. Easy to read and understand, this book focuses on ground level policy and regulatory actions that can create a workable foundation for commercially and environmentally sustainable private and community investment in distributed generation. A range of options for dealing with key controversial issues are analyzed. These issues include: - what are the sustainable business and climate friendly models; - when is hybrid distributed generation more suitable than pure renewable distributed generation; - what to do "when the big grid connects to the little grid"; - how should an economic regulator set tariffs for projects that have earned revenues from carbon credits; - how to implement revenue "top-ups" to feed-in tariffs for grid connected renewable generators; - how to deal with the political constraints of a uniform national tariff for rural mini-grids; - how to establish workable interconnection and operating standards when a distributed generator connects to an existing mini-grid or to the main grid; and - how to implement light-handed regulation. The book draws on the authors' on-the-ground experiences (both good and bad) in Tanzania, Kenya, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Cambodia and other countries. The book will be of immediate interest and use to developers, investors, regulators, utilities and policymakers. Hi everyone, *Dimagi is holding our first workshop focused around developing mobile apps for women’s empowerment and safety. The three-day workshop will take place in New Delhi, India from October 6th-8th. * *About this workshop: *With mobile technology, frontline programs can create mobile apps that frontline workers can use to support women's empowerment and safety activities. Dimagi <http://www.dimagi.com> has been active in this field, and has worked with numerous organizations to build similar mobile apps on our CommCare <http://www.commcarehq.org> platform. With CommCare, thousands of field workers are using mobile apps to track and support their clients with counselling forms, checklists, SMS reminders, and multimedia. This leads to better data collection, reporting, management, community education, and community-level service provision. The workshop will bring together prominent organisations running frontline service delivery programs focused on women’s empowerment and safety to discuss how technology can strengthen their frontline programs. Over the course of the three days, participants will: - Gain a general overview of existing mobile applications in the women's empowerment and safety space. - Brainstorm how mobile technology can support their own programs. - Build and present an application workflow for a generalised program.
