Pine St; Seattle, WA 98122 http://blackcoffeecoop.com TA3M-Seattle (Techno-Activism, 3rd Mondays) is a monthly event for people that either work on or want to learn more about online surveillance and censorship, the open source tools that are used to combat it, and issues and initiatives associated with this area. The idea is to bring together software developers, activists, concerned citizens, and others, so we they can both educate each other, and share knowledge. TA3M events take place in dozens of cities worldwide; Seattle started in September 2013. Starting this month, we're going to try something new, we're starting a book study group for the "Crypto Party Handbook". Beginners are encouraged to participate and learn; advanced users are encouraged to help teach beginners, and optionally submit patches to the book. If interested, please bring a copy of the PDF or EPUB on your tablet/netbook/phone, read chapters 1-2 before attending, and come with a list of open questions, and be prepared to discuss the material. It's a short 30-minute period, so come prepared with questions. This will be part of a second set of global hackathons centered around Aaron's work and legacy, with the hope of fostering a recurring bi-yearly event promoting social and technical activism. While goal of the event is to continue the Aaron started, what Noah needs help with is figuring out what current problems need solutions, as well as finding local participants and project ideas for this hackathon. In this presentation, "Protecting your privacy, anonymity and security with Linux and Open Source tools", Jeremy gives an overview of the available tools and configurations for basic through advanced level security and privacy measures. He will discuss example configurations, communication methods, and on-going operational security. All slides and presentation notes will be available for download. The talk will not include specific instructions for setup, but will have several resources available in the downloadable materials. If conditions allow, Jeremy will have a QubesOS laptop for demonstrations and hands-on purposes. Jeremy has been using UNIX/Linux since 1996 both personally and professionally. While Ubuntu/Debian based distributions are his current platforms, Jeremy remains agnostic about which OS is superior as they all have strengths and weaknesses. Since 2001, Jeremy has been concerned about privacy and users' rights and has been doing something about it since 2004. The latest NSA revelations have spurred him to share with anybody who will listen (and sometimes those who won't) the tools and techniques that he uses. Jeremy currently works as a System Security Administrator at a Tribal Casino but has been a Database Administrator, Web Developer, HIPAA Compliance Officer, Network Engineer, and a UNIX Administrator in the past. For fun, he volunteers with a Mountain Rescue unit and attends the annual DefCon conference, a large and popular hacker conference. In this presentation, "Reigning in Government Surveillance in Washington", Jamela will be speaking about the ACLU-WA's work focused on government use of surveillance technology. She will discuss various types of new technology such as automated license plate readers and drones and what the ACLU-WA is doing to ensure that government use of these technologies does not infringe upon our privacy rights. Jamela Debelak is the Technology and Liberty Director at the ACLU of Washington where she works to promote technology policy that protects and advances civil liberties in Washington. Prior to joining the ACLU-WA, she was Executive Director of the Center on Law and Information Policy at Fordham Law School. While there, she led research and programming on issues related to children's privacy, internet intermediary liability and online speech. She previously worked as an attorney at Dechert LLP in Philadelphia and New York, specializing in corporate and intellectual property issues. *We just opened applications for the winter 2014 Y Combinator batch, and we're happy to announce that there's something new this time: an application form for nonprofits. We're going to start including nonprofits in every YC batch.* * * *We'd been thinking about this for a while. We had a hypothesis that many newly founded nonprofits could benefit from the same techniques we use to help startups. We tested this with Watsi in the Winter 2013 batch and it worked wonderfully. They did all the same things as the other startups, including present at Demo Day (which is after all a room with lots of rich people in it).* * * *Since some people were confused when we funded Watsi, I'd better clarify that the money we're putting into the nonprofits will be a charitable donation, rather than an investment in the narrow sense. What: Matthew Thompson: Identifying children with serious illness in resource poor settings – how can vital signs be more useful? When: Tuesday, October 8th at 12 noon Where: The Allen Center, CSE 203 Join us for the second Change seminar of the fall quarter. This week Matthew Thompson from the Department of Family Medicine at UW will be speaking about how vital signs can be used to more effectively identify serious illness. *Abstract* Vital signs are key physiological measures that are used to assess the overall severity of illness in children, particularly in primary or community clinical settings. They include heart rate, breathing rate, temperature, and sometimes blood pressure, oxygen saturations and capillary refill time. Currently, the WHO’s Integrated Management of Childhood Illness only routinely uses breathing rate, and even in established primary care clinics low/middle income settings, vital signs are measured infrequently. So why aren’t vital signs used routinely to assess children? As with any ‘signal’, vital signs will only be useful for identifying children with serious illness if A) They can be measured accurately B) There are thresholds that define abnormal values, C) The diagnostic value of one or more abnormal vital signs is known, and D) vital signs provide diagnostic value over and above other clinical assessments. Over the past 7 years our Oxford-based group has explored novel ways of measuring breathing rate in children using the photoplethysmogram signal from pulse oximeters, developed new evidence-based centile charts of heart rate and breathing rate in children which are now being adopted worldwide, quantified the interaction of temperature with heart rate and with breathing rate, and evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of different combinations of vital signs for identifying children with serious illness in various settings. Vital signs could probably identify the majority of children with serious illness in primary care settings, but there are major gaps that prevent vital signs from being adopted routinely to assess unwell children. In this seminar I will share these research findings with the aim of exploring possible research collaborations across departments at UW in developing low cost technological solutions to vital sign measurement, interpretation/integration, as well as diagnostic accuracy studies that could inform child assessments in first contact settings in low/middle income countries *About the Speaker* Matthew Thompson has recently moved from the University of Oxford to take up a new position as Professor and Vice Chair of Research at the Department of Family Medicine at UW. He has a background as a Family Physician and trained and worked in the USA, UK and S Africa. He completed his MPH at UW and a DPhil in diagnostic research at the University of Oxford. His research as a clinical epidemiologist in Oxford over the last 10 years has focused on diagnostics, child health and infectious diseaseshttp://www.phc.ox.ac.uk/team/researchers-n-z/matthew-thompson. He set up and led the Oxford Centre for Monitoring and Diagnosis, which evaluates and conducts clinical studies on diagnostic tests and technologies relevant to primary care, including point of care tests and electronic devices. His child health research has explored more accurate ways to identify children with serious illness (e.g. meningitis) in primary care using clinical features and decision support. He is also currently PI of an EU-funded study to evaluate a mobile platform based version of IMCI and vital signs in Malawi, and is working on a Wellcome Trust study assessing the diagnostic value of vital signs in children in community clinics in Cape Town.

We're excited to have Jonathan Donner from MSR speak about Mobile Internet and Digital Inclusion in the Developing World. What: Jonathan Donner (MSR): Everybody’s Internet? Mobile Internet and Digital Inclusion in the Developing World When: Tuesday, October 1st at 12 noon Where: The Allen Center, CSE 203 Wireless broadband will soon cover 85% of the world’s population. This talk, taken from a book in preparation, details the growing importance of ‘mobile-centric internet use’ in the developing world, raising questions and challenges for policy and design In the talk I describe studies illustrating the remarkable potential of the mobile phone in three domains of socioeconomic development: microenterprises and livelihoods, citizen journalism, and secondary education. Yet, in each case, I use a ‘digital repertoires’ lens to illustrate how the capacity to generate and manipulate digital information remains concentrated among those with access to digital tools beyond the mobile phone. Some of these persistent digital stratifications can be reduced with combined inputs from technologists, researchers, practitioners, and policymakers. From natural user interfaces to language support to bandwidth pricing, there are concrete ways in which more empathetic design and policy can help a greater proportion of the world’s inhabitants participate in the information society, even if, for many, the primary device will remain an inexpensive mobile phone. Jonathan Donner is a researcher in the Technology for Emerging Markets Group (TEM) at Microsoft Research. For the last decade, Jonathan has published research on the growth in mobile telephony in the developing world, focusing on its implications for socioeconomic development and its uses in everyday life. His projects at TEM include Microenterprise Development, Mobile Banking, Citizen Journalism, Mobile Health, and Youth and New Media. Prior to Joining Microsoft Research, he was a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the Earth Institute at Columbia University, and worked with Monitor Company and the OTF Group, consultancies in Boston, MA. In addition to dozens of scholarly articles, he is the author, with Richard Ling, of Mobile Communication, and co-editor, with Patricia Mechael, of mHealth in Practice: Mobile Technology for Health Promotion in the Developing World. His Ph.D. is from Stanford University in Communication Research. Jonathan is based in South Africa and is a visiting academic at the University of Cape Town’s Centre in ICT4D.
