This presentation engages international librarianship as an energizing concept in a networked world. It highlights opportunities for joint engagement of equal partners and challenges of this dynamic relationship for libraries and library development. It will draw on some of current research, that speaks to the extent of "internationalized spaces" in librarianship. About Dr. Mbambo-Thata Dr. Buhle Mbambo-Thata is a visiting scholar at TASCHA this summer. Currently Dr. Mbambo-Thata is the Executive Director, Library Services, University of South Africa. Prior to that, she was University Librarian, University of Zimbabwe. She is a sought-out speaker at conferences in innovative usage of ICT in libraries and in higher education. Her research interests are in information literacy, and women and ICT. She holds a PhD in Information Science. .

In addition to capturing training and participant data, TrainSMART has a robust reporting module that allows users to run various automatic reports, as well as create and save customized reports. Responsibilities Technical Responsibilities (90%) * Use open-source technologies to enhance TrainSMART functionality. Specifically development in PHP and MySQL * Establish development environment for collaboration on TrainSMART development using selected frameworks and tools. Must collaborate with an outside vendor who also is working on the code for coordination * Review existing codebase to assure familiarity with TrainSMART data model and functional architecture. * Advise on strategy for improving the performance and integration of the off-line TrainSMART module * Perform direct development and management of reliable and secure environments for production deployments, including the use of virtual machines, openVPN, SSH/tunneling (scp, sftp) etc. * Add feature enhancements to the off-line TrainSMART module. * Implement bug fixes for existing TrainSMART modules. * Perform testing of bug fixes and feature enhancements. * Assist with developing technical documentation, as needed. * Provide regular reporting and demonstrations on progress with assigned software development tasks to colleagues. Evaluating and assessing broadband policy A by-invitation experts' workshop New America Foundation September 19-21, 2012 With broadband becoming the central means for providing information services in the 21st century, policymakers struggle with choosing the best model to ensure universal access, adoption and usage. Broadband policy choices range from massive government investment to total deregulation and everything in between including various combinations of regulatory regimes, limited government investment and public-private partnerships. Debates regarding the right path to follow often tend to reflect ideological convictions or stakeholder interests. It is thus requisite to provide analytic scholarly input into the debate, delivered through the evaluation and assessment of broadband deployment policies that have been adopted in recent years. The Institute for Information Policy at Penn State University and the New America Foundation are pleased to announce this call for paper proposals discussing the assessment and evaluation of broadband policies and their implementation. Proposals based on new research data and analysis are especially welcome. Authors of the selected papers will be invited to present and discuss them during a three day by-invitation-only experts workshop designed to bring together up to a dozen American and international experts to be held at the New America Foundation in Washington, DC between September 19 - 21, 2012. This workshop is part of a series of events focused on "Making Policy Research Accessible," organized by the IIP, with the support of the Ford Foundation and the Media Democracy Fund. Global Impact Study releases user survey data

The Global Impact Study is pleased to announce the release of our user survey data. Over 5,000 public access ICT users were surveyed in libraries, telecenters, and cybercafes in Bangladesh, Brazil, Chile, Ghana, and the Philippines. The data collected through these surveys is now publicly available in both SPSS/SAV and CSV formats. Accompanying the data at this time are two documents: a "readme" file that provides information on the complexities of the data, including survey skip patterns, and a document that explains new variables that have been added to the data to aid in data analysis. We will also be releasing more documents on the user survey and user survey data, including sampling strategies, in the coming weeks, which can all be found in the Global Impact Study web library<http://library.globalimpactstudy.org/>. I'm working on a policy brief about girls & women, ICT, and libraries - specifically how libraries can be a safe, reliable place where girls & women in developing countries can gain access to ICT skills and technology training.
