Dr. Link's seminar is titled: "Moving survey research to the next level using mobile platforms and social media." New technology development and survey methods enhancement have powered survey research for more than 75 years. Never before, however, has the proliferation, complexity, and growth of technology been as expansive and rapid as seen today. Smartphones and tablets, social networking, as well as application development and metering devices offer survey researchers an array of potential new techniques and approaches for the collection of behavioral, attitudinal, and related data. This includes new modes for administering surveys, adjunct data collection techniques that could augment survey data, and, in some instances, approaches that could replace traditional self-reported surveys with more real-time, electronic data capture. This seminar provides an innovative look at current and potential future uses of new technology devices and platforms. Current applications, known best practices, and cautions will be discussed for a range of new data collection platforms, including smartphones (for surveys, GPS, and visual data collection), Internet-based data capture (beyond Web surveys), and leveraging social network platforms (surveys and other forms of information). The seminar concludes with an examination of some of the impediments to research and development of new technologies within the field of survey research and provides some guidance on how such tools can be developed, tested, and deployed in a more efficient and effective manner. Michael Link is Chief Methodologist/VP for Research Methods at The Nielsen Company, leading Nielsen's Global Mobile Innovation Center. He has a broad base of experience in survey research, having worked in academia (University of South Carolina, 1989-1999), not-for-profit research (RTI International, 1999-2004), and government (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2004-2007) before joining Nielsen. Dr. Link's research efforts focus on developing methodologies for confronting the most pressing issues facing measurement science, including improving participation and data quality, use of multiple modes in data collection, obtaining participation from hard-to-survey populations, and developing mobile and electronic measurement methodologies to supplement or replace self-reports. Along with several colleagues, he received the American Association for Public Opinion Research 2011 Mitofsky Innovator's Award for his research on address-based sampling. His numerous research articles have appeared in leading scientific journals, such as Public Opinion Quarterly, International Journal of Public Opinion Research, and Journal of Official Statistics. Hi everybody, USAID is seeking for evidence to be reviewed at a summit in May on CHW performance. The concept note is attached. The review teams are looking for publications (both peer-reviewed and grey literature) that identify evidence-based interventions in support of CHW performance. They will review the papers and then write up and present synopsis documents (one for each review team) and then publish those in a journal. I'm told they are making a special effort to identify existing literature on evidence-based eHealth/mHealth interventions in particular. Please send your submissions to Adam Slote at aslote(a)usaid.gov. The deadline is this Friday. The papers they collect will be considered by the review team at the summit. take care, neal

FoneAstra Is Finalist For Vodafone Wireless Innovation Project

The Vodafone Americas Foundation (http://project.vodafone-us.com/about-the-project/) designed the Wireless Innovation Project as a competition to promote innovation and increase implementation of wireless related technology for a better world. This year, UW Change’s FoneAstra project was chosen as one of the eight finalists. FoneAstra (http://www.cs.washington.edu/homes/rohitc/foneastra.html) integrates a temperature sensor probe with a commodity mobile phone to ensure safe pasteurization of donor breast milk at human milk banks. It is a low-cost accessory for mobile phones that provides continuous temperature monitoring and real-time feedback to users during pasteurization, and archives temperature-time data at a server for remote review and audit. The total cost for the monitoring system will be less than US$100, compared to commercial-grade pasteurizers, which cost up to $12,000. FoneAstra and PATH, recently received a Gates Grand Challenge Exploration grant (http://www.path.org/news/an111107-infant-nutrition.php) to deploy the technology at human milk banks in South Africa. FoneAstra will help ensure that the breast milk given to vulnerable infants is free of bacteria and viruses, including HIV, while retaining its nutritional value.
