Even the phrase itself sparks fierce debate. I hope these guidelines help: - Generally speaking, my personal opinion is that international development research is any that attempts to address disparities between developed and developing countries - in health, education, gender equality, human rights, environment, infrastructure, resilience to shocks, etc. - We seek students conducting research that is specifically tailored to applications in developing countries. To this end, we welcome engineers or computer scientists who are working on technology that is specifically targeted to developing countries - ICTD being a prime example. - International development research is not simply research that happens to be conducted in a developing country (e.g., the study of Mexican culture and art), but rather, research that is specific to the disparities faced by developing countries (e.g., human rights abuses under transitional governments). We simply want participants whose research will benefit from the kind of interdisciplinary, collaborative environment we wish to create. In my view, ICTD students may benefit greatly from the contextualization of their research within the broader international development research community. We will group participants by theme for both small-group and large-group sessions. If there are students for whom we cannot find suitable groups, we will give them the option of joining one of the existing groups (perhaps students who use similar methodology or who work in the same country/region). It can be also be challenging to stay connected to practitioners who are implementing development activities and trying to put knowledge generated through research into practice. This is particularly true of graduate students, who are often early in their careers, and who often have fewer funds and opportunities for networking. * * * IDRN aims to facilitate the kind of communication and collaboration that is needed for efficient, timely, topical and useful development research. * The International Development Research Network (IDRN) is a graduate student-driven initiative based out of the University of British Columbia that is attempting to build a strong community of graduate students, faculty and research staff at UBC and beyond. What they're looking for is a consultant who can come to the capital Bangui for a one to two-month contract (possibly renewable) ASAP, though no later than April, in order to: Prepare the surveys for use in the field - adapting them to a format acceptable for use by the application, if necessary programming the surveys, and supervising their translation into local languages where necessary; Prepare the handsets for deployment; Train DRC's field project/M&E teams on their use; Oversee the implementation of the programme in the field; Set up and test workflow processes for the extraction and analysis of results; Help to analyse the results. The desired profile is for someone dynamic and engaged, who speaks French well enough to work autonomously in the language and conduct trainings, has experience in field data collection and training of data collectors, and in addition either has already used ODK or similar digital data collection methods or is technically strong and capable of picking up the necessary know-how very quickly. If the technical knowledge is lacking but everything else is there, it's also possible that the most technical aspects (eg programming of surveys into XML) could be done as a separate role. The exact timing, duration and renumeration of the position can be negotiated, but as of right now the latter would be EUR 3,000 per month + return ticket to Bangui and accommodation in CAR but no additional per diem. We are looking for talented individuals with an eagerness to help us deploy technologies to help organizations deliver quality health care to urban and rural communities around the world. We are seeking applicants for positions in the following countries: Thailand: Fellow would be based in Kamphaeng Phet, and helping to coordinate an SMS project to enhance a large health project. This position requires a high level of organization and ability to interact with a wide range of stakeholders. Zambia: Fellow would be based in Lusaka and working on a range of mobile phone projects. Project will likely require travel to other countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Gaetano Borriello discusses ODK Tables

This Thursday at Change, CSE faculty member Gaetano Borriello will be leading a discussion about a proposed smartphone application ODK Tables. He will provide a brief overview of the system and ask for feedback from the group on the approach and design elements of the application. SMS services are ubiquitously available around the world and are supported on even the lowest cost mobile phones. Applications are being developed that use SMS as the primary communication medium to a server back-end. However, this approach requires an ecosystem for implementing information services in the cloud, SMS gateways to get the messages to those servers, and web access to get to the servers’ data. Unfortunately, these capabilities are not readily available in all parts of the world, especially not in many developing world contexts. We propose ODK Tables, a smartphone application that organizes structured SMS communications to make it easier to manage large numbers of SMS messages. ODK Tables applies a spreadsheet metaphor to make it easy to create a variety of applications without the need to program or deploy services in the web. In this talk, we will describe some of the features of ODK Tables and how it is applied in a few use cases. We seek feedback on the approach and design elements of the application.
