But the game the two 2010 Yale graduates created to bring attention to these issues did win first place at the U.S. Imagine Cup, which took place April 23-26 in Washington, D.C. Riederer is a 2006 graduate of Lourdes High School in Rochester. The Imagine Cup is a student software competition sponsored by Microsoft Corp. that encourages participants to use technology to improve the lives of people locally and across the globe. Now in its eighth year, the competition included entries from 14,000 students. .....

In fall, students read papers on technology in resource-constrained environments (RCEs). In winter, CSE 490d and HCDE 419 students formed interdisciplinary project groups to scope and design projects for RCEs. In spring 2010, students from CSE 490d and HCDE 496 implemented and evaluated the projects designed in winter quarter. In CSE 477 Digital System Design (aka Hardware Capstone aka Embedded Systems Capstone), students worked in groups on a single project that paralleled the experience of working for a real company or customer. Students prototyped a substantial project that mixed hardware, software, and communication components. It identifies the load characteristics of connected electronic devices and allows you to switch them on and off based on timer events and changes in the load. It also records the power usage of connected devices, so that you can see more precisely how much power each device uses. The Power Pulse Passively Powered Energy Measuring System uses harvested energy from a circuit breaker box to power up a micro-controller sensor, which in turn measures the energy consumption of the home/office. The data is sent via wi-fi to an access point, which then uploads the data to Google Power Meter. ---------- CSE 490D/HCDE 419 Projects The Midwife's Ultrasound project is developing a portable, simple, low-cost ultrasound device targeted for use by midwives in Uganda. Using a USB ultrasound probe, we have developed a system that is both simpler and more affordable than any other device currently on the market. MultiLearn is an educational tool allowing multiple students to use a computer to answer math and multiple choice questions. Paired with a new web application, it aims to provide teachers with an easy way to measure individual student progress and the overall effectiveness of their curriculum. ODK Data in Any Order (DAO) allows doctors to collect data in novel ways throughout the world. Starting from UW's Open Data Kit (ODK), ODK DAO allows doctors and clinicians to document symptoms in a flexible manner as they go through a patient visit. ------------------------

Darius Jazayeri on OpenMRS

This Thursday at Change, Darius Jazayeri will be discussing his work on OpenMRS Our world continues to be ravaged by pandemics of epic proportions, as over 40 million people are infected with or diseases such as HIV/AIDS, multi-drug resistant tuberculosis, and malaria — most (up to 95%) of these afflictions are present in developing countries. Prevention and treatment interventions on this scale require efficient information management, which is critical as clinical care must increasingly be entrusted to less skilled providers. Whether for lack of time, developers, or money, most health care programs in developing countries manage their information with simple spreadsheets or small, poorly designed databases…if anything at all. To help them, we need to find a way not only to improve management tools, but also to reduce unnecessary, duplicative efforts. As a response to these challenges, the Open Medical Record System (OpenMRS®) formed in 2004 as a open source medical record system platform for developing countries. OpenMRS is a multi-institution, nonprofit collaborative led by Regenstrief Institute, Inc., a world-renowned leader in medical informatics research, and Partners In Health, a Boston-based philanthropic organization with a focus on improving the lives of underprivileged people worldwide through health care service and advocacy. OpenMRS is a software platform and a reference application which enables design of a customized medical records system with no programming knowledge (although medical and systems analysis knowledge is required). It is a common platform upon which medical informatics efforts in developing countries can be built. To date, OpenMRS has been implemented in twenty countries throughout the world, including South Africa, Kenya, Rwanda, Lesotho, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Uganda, Tanzania, Haiti, India, China, United States, Pakistan, and the Phillipines. This work is supported in part by organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), The Rockefeller Foundation, and the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). The *2010 Annual Conference of the International Network for Postgraduate Students in the Area of ICT4D <http://www.humanit.org/PID>* (IPID) will be held the 9th-10th September 2010 at Universitat Politècnica de Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain. This is a mainly academic conference, with all its procedures, but much more informal and constructive than usual. Its main purpose is twofold: - To let postgraduate students present short papers about their research in a supportive environment where they can gain positive feedback from other participants; - To provide an opportunity to discuss key themes of interest to ICT4D postgraduates. The conference organisers would be pleased to hear from potential participants about the themes they would like to have discussed. this funding is for projects in the us. there is one deadline on june 24th, and another in september. both are for funding year 2011. ------------------------- Through its Education Technology research grants program, the Institute intends to support research on education technology tools that are designed to provide or support instruction in reading, writing, mathematics, or science (including pre-reading, pre-writing, early mathematics, and early science) or to provide professional development for teachers related to instruction in reading, writing, mathematics, or science. The Institute intends to contribute to improvement of reading, writing, mathematics, and science learning by (1) developing innovative education technology tools intended to improve reading, writing, mathematics, science, or general study skills; (2) evaluating fully developed education technology tools intended to improve reading, writing, mathematics, science, or general study skills through efficacy or replication trials; (3) evaluating the effectiveness of fully developed education technology tools intended to improve reading, writing, mathematics, science, or general study skills that are implemented at scale; and (4) developing and/or validating assessments that use education technology and that can be used in instructional settings.
