Proposals should be sent by 25 May 2010. BACKGROUND Recognising both the growing impact of climate change in developing countries and the growing role of ICTs, Canada's International Development Research Centre is funding a two-year project on ICTs, climate change and development (see www.niccd.org) The project is co-ordinated by the University of Manchester's Centre for Development Informatics. As part of the project, six thematic papers will be commissioned and written during 2010 on various aspects of this topic. The papers should be 6,000-10,000 words in length, in English, and aimed at a "reflective practitioner" audience by summarising current evidence and then producing best practice strategic recommendations. We are looking for "generic" papers that draw evidence from, and relate to, all developing countries; rather than individual region, country or project case write-ups. Primary research is not expected. The papers should build on the Scoping Study produced recently as part of the project - http://www.niccd.org/resources.htm - which reviews current literature on ICTs, climate change and development (ICCD). Section 4 of this document identifies six ICCD thematic areas - mitigation, monitoring, adaptation, strategy, disaster management/response, and ICT impacts and issues. We would be happy to receive proposals against these thematic areas but we are also happy to receive proposals suggesting alternative ICCD themes and alternative ways of conceptualising the field. PROCESS / TIMESCALE We require proposals to be sent electronically by 25 May 2010, and aim to confirm accepted proposals by mid-June. First drafts of the papers will be due by the end of September 2010. Final drafts will be due by the end of November. One author per paper will be invited (and funded) to attend a discussion and presentation workshop on ICCD to be held in London in mid-December. The finalised copy of the paper will be made available online and disseminated via the project network. It is also our intention to publish the papers as part of a book to be produced at the end of the project in 2011, and to produce a strategy brief summarising the paper. PAYMENT Authors will be contracted by the University of Manchester to produce a draft version of the thematic paper, followed by a finalised version that acceptably meets quality requirements following draft review comments. We will also seek authors' input to revision for the proposed book and to summarisation for strategy brief production. A payment of £1,200 will be made on acceptance of the draft paper, and a further payment of £2,400 on acceptance of the finalised paper. The Computing Community Consortium (CCC) and the Computing Research Association (CRA), with anticipated funding from the National Science Foundation, are pleased to announce a new call for Computing Innovation Fellows (CIFellows) for the 2010-11 academic year. The CIFellows Project is an opportunity for recent Ph.D. graduates in computer science and closely related fields to obtain one- to two-year postdoctoral positions at universities, industrial research laboratories, and other organizations that advance the field of computing and its positive impact on society. This Thursday: HCDE/CSE Capstone Project Presentations

This Thursday at Change, come hear about three ongoing projects in a joint CSE-HCDE course: The Ugandan Midwives' Ultrasound, ODK Data in Any Order, and MultiLearn for Seattle Area Schools. The student groups will give short presentations on their projects and there will be time for questions and discussion about each project. --------------------------- More detail on the class and the projects: In Winter quarter, students from HCDE 419 (HCI) and CSE 490D worked together on projects designing technologies for resource constrained environments. In Spring quarter, three of these projects are continuing as CSE capstone projects partnered with HCDE research groups. This Thursday we have asked the groups to give presentations on the current status of their projects to get feedback from the awesome Change community. Please join us to hear more about the projects! ODK DAO will build on the work of ODK Collect but will attempt to allow doctors more flexibility in the way they collect patient data. --------------- Midwife's Ultrasound The Portable Ultrasound Group is working to develop a low-cost, easy-to-use, portable ultrasound device for midwives in the developing world. This project involves UI development, image analysis, and controlling peripheral devices. We are working in collaboration with Dr. Rob Nathan, a radiologist involved in the Portable Maternal Ultrasound Initiative. --------------- Multilearn In many Seattle area elementary school classrooms there are far more students than computers. The Multilearn system allows multiple students to use one computer through the use of individual keypads. We are working to expand Multilearn to provide teachers, parents, and students with feedback on students' performance through data presentation, and to expand the toolkit of interaction/games that can be used with the device. ---------------

We invite submissions of demonstrations for ICTD 2010. The demo session provides researchers and practitioners a venue for showcasing live demonstrations of their work. The focus of a demonstration may span novel hardware or software systems, video footage, or physical artifacts. Example demos may include interactive demos of specific tools or innovative applications of existing tools (Note: there is likely to be a separate session showing video-footage of work done, while the demo contributions should focus mainly on the technology). The exhibition of open resources and their impact in real world contexts are particularly welcome. The exhibition of open resources and their impact in real world contexts are particularly welcome. Unlike ICTD 2010 papers, the subject of a demo may have been published previously, either in ICTD or in other venues. However, the demonstration itself should be new and interesting to the ICTD community, and should reflect work that is at least as mature as a poster presentation. Demo submissions may represent research projects, commercial or not-for-profit tools, or government initiatives. Both novel projects as well as well-established systems are invited for demonstration. At the conference, all demonstrations will be presented in parallel with an interactive audience (comparable to a poster session).
