This Thursday at Change, Brian Ferris, Krysta Yousoufian, and Kyle Rector will be leading a discussion about current projects that use technology to address transportation issues in developing countries. They will be providing short overviews of three articles, and leading a discussion around questions inspired by this work. The articles covered will include: Transport, the missing link? the open data kit team (http://opendatakit.org) is in dire need of a logo and we need your help. if you know a designer (or are a designer) looking to contribute to a growing open source project, now is your chance! before you get started, we have three rules. - go big! although the core team works on healthcare in africa, odk is a much broader project. try to stay away from global development or health themes, but feel free to play off the words and ideas in the project name. - think unified! we build a lot of tools (collect, aggregate, build, voice, clinic, etc), so a brand that could be used across all of them would be great. for example, most of the adobe creative suite applications use the same basic theme. see them at http://goo.gl/1HYP. - be inspired! if you've never designed a logo, http://goo.gl/2KBy has some great ideas to help you get started. that site also has links to an amazing array of examples. our goal is to have a couple of logos that we can pick from, so spread the word and send in a few! the deadline for the competition is november 1 at midnight. send your attempts to yanokwa(a)gmail.com. thanks for helping make odk a more visually pleasing project, yaw

Hi all, This Tuesday the 26th Gayo Mhila will be giving a talk at 3:30pm. He will be giving an overview of the work that he is doing with D-Tree International, including CommCare and e-IMCI. He will also be discussing some of the techniques that D-Tree uses to get end users involved in the design and refinement of their applications. Gayo is incredibly insightful and is a leader in designing and deploying mobile health programs--it should be a great talk! We will also be going to lunch on the ave on Tuesday (probably around 1130am). Email me directly if you're interested in that. The focus areas of the workshop include, but are not limited to: Interfaces for interaction with multimedia content: Audio, images and video content is easy to understand for low-literacy users. From an interaction perspective, therefore, we need to specifically look at interfaces that can enable easy creation and navigation of such content. Intuitive Interfaces: Any interface that has a high learning curve is always difficult to proliferate in developing regions. Most prominent interfaces are either intuitive to use or are easy enough to spread by word of mouth. Intuitiveness of an interface is the key to its proliferation. Collaborative learning interfaces: Proxy usage of IT services is very common in developing regions. It is important to develop interfaces that enable users to directly use the services irrespective of their literacy levels or exposure to IT. Interfaces that enable users to facilitate other users to navigate content or access services through collaborative usage will help proliferation of services. Language independent interfaces: There are around 2000 languages in Africa and more than 20 in India. So interfaces that are not too language processing dependent would be more scalable and have wider applicability. Case studies and evaluations: of applications/interfaces successfully deployed or tested in the areas of healthcare, education, e-governance, agriculture etc. We seek original, unpublished papers in the following three categories: (a) Position papers that describe novel ideas that can lead to interesting research directions, (b) Early results or work-in-progress that has significant promise, or, (c) Full papers. Papers should be of 4-6 pages in length in the IUI publication format. The LaTeX and Microsoft Word templates are available at the workshop website. All submissions should be in the PDF format and should be submitted electronically through the IUI4DR Easychair Conference site (https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=iui4dr11) Since the submission deadlines are dependent on the IUI conference, we will not be able to grant any extensions in any circumstances. CommCare and Dimagi Awarded USAID Innovation Ventures Grant

CommCare <http://commcare.cs.washington.edu/> is a mobile tool designed by UW-CSE graduate student Brian DeRenzi<http://www.cs.washington.edu/homes/bderenzi/>to help strengthen and monitor community health programs. The project was recently awarded one of eight development innovation ventures grants from USAID. The grant will support the continued effort by Dimagi <http://www.dimagi.com/commcare/> to adapt the CommCare platform for wide-scale use within the Accredited Social Health Activist (ASHA) program in India.
