Abstract In this talk I will focus attention on the many forms of online collaboration, the motivations of those who collaborate, and the incentive systems that support such collaboration. I will argue that some current models of online motivation are overly simplistic, and I will lay out a model of adaptive incentive systems that accounts for three factors: (1) individual differences in attitudes and beliefs, (2) diverging paths of participation over time, and (3) the unique social-technical contexts of online collaboration. I will dive deeply into two recent studies. First, I will present a lab-based experiment which examines the motivational power of social comparisons, as well as the connections between social comparisons, competence beliefs, and individual differences in social value orientation. Second, I will describe a multi-method data analysis of Wikipedians’ activities as they move from their first experiences through fuller participation. Through these two empirical examples I will illustrate the benefits of adaptive incentive systems and a research path to enable their design and implementation.
About the Speaker Judd Antin is a Post-Doctoral Research Scientist in the Internet Experiences group at Yahoo! Research. Judd’s areas of expertise include incentives and motivation for online collaboration, online communities, collective action and social dilemmas, as well as trust, reliability, and credibility. His research interests center on user-generated content, social media, the wisdom of crowds, distributed work, and all other forms of online collaboration. Judd completed his PhD in Information Management & Systems at the School of Information at UC Berkeley in 2010.
