FW: Microsoft Research Connections announce RFP for the Role of Technology in Human Trafficking
From: Rane Johnson [mailto:ranej@microsoft.com]<mailto:[mailto:ranej@microsoft.com]> Sent: Wednesday, December 07, 2011 10:37 AM To: Rane Johnson; Alethea Lodge-Clarke; Tony Hey; Lee Dirks Cc: Samantha Doerr (LCA); danah boyd Subject: Microsoft Research Connections announce RFP for the Role of Technology in Human Trafficking As we spoke earlier this year, I made you aware of the work being done by danah boyd, Microsoft Digital Crimes Unit and myself on human trafficking of minors-including the illegal trade of children and teens for commercial sexual exploitation in the United States. We agree that this is a crime so vile that it makes most people shudder. But unfortunately, not everyone recoils: pedophiles and procurers have made the commercial sexual exploitation of children an international business, and there is little doubt that technology is increasingly playing a role in their criminal practices. Which is why today I am pleased to announce that Microsoft Research Connections is partnering with danah boyd<http://www.danah.org/>, one of the top social media researchers from the Microsoft New England Research and Development Lab<http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/labs/newengland/>, and the Microsoft Digital Crimes Unit<http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/presskits/dcu/> to issue a Request for Proposals<http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/collaboration/focus/education/human-trafficking-rfp.aspx> (RFP) to investigate the implications of technology in this heinous crime. You can read my blog post here<http://blogs.msdn.com/b/msr_er/archive/2011/12/07/rfp-on-using-technology-to-combat-human-trafficking.aspx> You can access the RFP here<http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/collaboration/focus/education/human-trafficking-rfp.aspx> You can access our human trafficking framework here<http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/collaboration/focus/education/htframework-2011.pdf> I hope you will share this with all researchers you know and I hope you will consider submitting a proposal. We hope to make significant impact but need to start a rigorous academic community to help us truly understand the magnitude of the problem before we can create solutions that will make a lasting impact. Consider sharing : [Description: http://blogs.msdn.com/CustomWidgets/SocialMediaSharingUC/Resources/facebook....] <http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=http://blogs.msdn.com/b/msr_er/archive/2011/12/07/rfp-on-using-technology-to-combat-human-trafficking.aspx&t=RFP+on+Using+Technology+to+Combat+Human+Trafficking> [Description: http://blogs.msdn.com/CustomWidgets/SocialMediaSharingUC/Resources/twitter.g...] <http://twitter.com/home?status=RFP+on+Using+Technology+to+Combat+Human+Trafficking%20:%20http://blogs.msdn.com/b/msr_er/archive/2011/12/07/rfp-on-using-technology-to-combat-human-trafficking.aspx> [Description: http://blogs.msdn.com/CustomWidgets/SocialMediaSharingUC/Resources/digg.gif] <http://digg.com/submit?url=http://blogs.msdn.com/b/msr_er/archive/2011/12/07/rfp-on-using-technology-to-combat-human-trafficking.aspx&title=RFP+on+Using+Technology+to+Combat+Human+Trafficking> [Description: http://blogs.msdn.com/CustomWidgets/SocialMediaSharingUC/Resources/delicious...] <http://del.icio.us/post?url=http://blogs.msdn.com/b/msr_er/archive/2011/12/07/rfp-on-using-technology-to-combat-human-trafficking.aspx&title=RFP+on+Using+Technology+to+Combat+Human+Trafficking> [Description: http://blogs.msdn.com/CustomWidgets/SocialMediaSharingUC/Resources/reddit.gi...] <http://www.reddit.com/submit?url=http://blogs.msdn.com/b/msr_er/archive/2011/12/07/rfp-on-using-technology-to-combat-human-trafficking.aspx&title=RFP+on+Using+Technology+to+Combat+Human+Trafficking> [Description: http://blogs.msdn.com/CustomWidgets/SocialMediaSharingUC/Resources/linkedin....] <http://www.linkedin.com/shareArticle?mini=true&ro=true&url=http://blogs.msdn.com/b/msr_er/archive/2011/12/07/rfp-on-using-technology-to-combat-human-trafficking.aspx&title=RFP+on+Using+Technology+to+Combat+Human+Trafficking&summary=&source=Microsoft&armin=armin> [Description: http://blogs.msdn.com/CustomWidgets/SocialMediaSharingUC/Resources/slashdot....] <http://slashdot.org/bookmark.pl?url=http://blogs.msdn.com/b/msr_er/archive/2011/12/07/rfp-on-using-technology-to-combat-human-trafficking.aspx&title=RFP+on+Using+Technology+to+Combat+Human+Trafficking> [Description: http://blogs.msdn.com/CustomWidgets/SocialMediaSharingUC/Resources/myspace.g...] <http://www.myspace.com/Modules/PostTo/Pages/?u=http://blogs.msdn.com/b/msr_er/archive/2011/12/07/rfp-on-using-technology-to-combat-human-trafficking.aspx&t=RFP+on+Using+Technology+to+Combat+Human+Trafficking> [Description: http://blogs.msdn.com/CustomWidgets/SocialMediaSharingUC/Resources/technorat...] <http://technorati.com/faves/?add=http://blogs.msdn.com/b/msr_er/archive/2011/12/07/rfp-on-using-technology-to-combat-human-trafficking.aspx> [Description: http://blogs.msdn.com/CustomWidgets/SocialMediaSharingUC/Resources/friendfee...] <http://friendfeed.com/?url=http://blogs.msdn.com/b/msr_er/archive/2011/12/07/rfp-on-using-technology-to-combat-human-trafficking.aspx&title=RFP+on+Using+Technology+to+Combat+Human+Trafficking> [Description: http://blogs.msdn.com/CustomWidgets/SocialMediaSharingUC/Resources/messenger...] <http://profile.live.com/badge?url=http://blogs.msdn.com/b/msr_er/archive/2011/12/07/rfp-on-using-technology-to-combat-human-trafficking.aspx&title=RFP+on+Using+Technology+to+Combat+Human+Trafficking> [Description: http://blogs.msdn.com/CustomWidgets/SocialMediaSharingUC/Resources/stumbleup...] <http://www.stumbleupon.com/submit?url=http://blogs.msdn.com/b/msr_er/archive/2011/12/07/rfp-on-using-technology-to-combat-human-trafficking.aspx&title=RFP+on+Using+Technology+to+Combat+Human+Trafficking> Thank you, Rane Johnson-Stempson Education & Scholarly Communications Principal Research Director | Microsoft Research Connections | Cell +1.425.457.3665 | Office +1.425.421-3447 [Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: Description: cid:image002.png@01CBC7A7.6CBB9650]<http://www.research.microsoft.com/connections>
