There is a hackathon coming up that looks like a great fit for your group as it’s directly connected to a key international development issue — the global fishing industry. Could you help spread the word to your group? 

On April 22-24 (next weekend), we are participating in Fishackathon, a globally coordinated hackathon led by the U.S. Department of State to address sustainable fishing issues. Locally, the event is sponsored by Microsoft and Vulcan, with support from the City, Open Seattle, University of Washington, the Living Computer Museum, and the Seattle Aquarium. The top submission from Seattle will be considered in the global competition, which includes the winners from all 41 participating cities. 

We have Ray Hilborn, the leading expert on overfishing, coming in from University of Washington School of Aquatic & Fishery Science to give the keynote, and a number of mentors with deep subject matter expertise, like Mark Powell, who runs Vulcan’s program on illegal fishing. Prizes include gift certificates for Smart Catch restaurants and annual memberships to the Living Computer Museum and the Seattle Aquarium. As if that’s not enough, Ethan Stowell restaurants is catering the Friday evening kickoff. It should be a ton of fun – basically, we’re gunning for the Seattle team to be the global winner by making sure the teams have everything they might need to succeed.
